The 70's imo, was the best decade for horror.  The 80's started off really strong for the first five years but then went down hill from there.  The 70's were strong from beginning to end.

Out of the top 100 films, these horror films are locked to make my list:

Its so strange, here that's not a main genre / genre #1 = horror movie.

Quote

n, as well as because of the tendency of genres to shift with public mores and to reflect the zeitgeist.

Quote

As well, he has asked whether there is a "... finite taxonomy of genres or are they in principle infinite?" and whether genres are "...timeless essences ephemeral, time-bound entities? Are genres culture-bound or trans-cultural?"

Quote

Because genres are easier to recognize than to define, academics agree they cannot be identified in a rigid way.[19] Furthermore, different countries and cultures define genres in different ways. A typical example are war movies. In US, they are mostly related to the two World Wars whereas, in other countries, movies related to wars in other historical periods are considered war movies.

Sooo interesting to learn other POV / rules /...

And a good reminder for the next heated discussion, the other person might understand a definition in another way and as such 2 people can speak with each other without realising they do not speak about the same...

I will say there will be a few very popular and award winning films that don’t make my list

For me there is a movie that is very liked in here, that will make my list just so that I can reach 100.

One of the great things about revisiting an entire decade is that you get to go back and kind of ReDiscover a lot of the films that you haven't seen in ages. Sounds like five easy pieces, a lot of the dirty Harry movies, mean Streets taxi driver and so many more are films that I'm going to probably watch again over the next month or so.

Something I am curious about is that I'm wondering if people will put classic movies on their list, like the godfather's or The Exorcist, even though they might not have seen them. I really hope that is not the case. I hope these lists are honest and if you have not seen a movie don't put it on your list.

Have not seen godfather and thus won't vote for it.

I have seen Exorcist and thus won't vote for it. It may even be worse than Jaws.

I, CLAUDIUS is a straight-up TV series, though. It had like 12 episodes.

Well true, but lots of famous directors did stuff for TV in the 1970s and 1980s.

I figure that if someone wants to use their vote on a TV show and no one else agrees with them, nothing is lost (except for that person who used a vote on a TV show).

I saw it in ~ 6 parts, maybe they cut it differently for different markets? Aired it as doubles? Not sure, maybe I had the VHS of then??? Can't remember that detail, if it was as VHS then I saw it later than I think that I saw it as the first one I owned was whilst living in another city.

Beside that, nearly 12h, that is ~ the limit for what I call still a mini-series, as then at least the usual series had 22 to 26# episodes per season (at least those where  I watched wnough of them to be aware of the count)

See the genre surprise in Baumer's thread, different detail in the use of the same term, always intersting to learn about

TV movies are definitely not allowed this is for theatrical release only

?

You're not taking lists or writing the write-ups, are you?

I don't anticipate any TV movies making it on though. But there is some original TV material from the 80s I would allow on a 80s list, partly because they got theatrical releases in other places.

Spielberg's Duel was released theatrically in other countries, too.
