It wasn't going to. Not after Jungle Book just won for the same technology.

Also, the academy loves both VFX plus Practical.

True, but I thought it was a step up from Jungle Book and overall the visuals were just astounding. Not complaining too much as I loved 1917.

Last year's hostless ceremony worked really well because it had a great intro from Tina, Amy, and Maya, and then streamlined through the awards. And moments like Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga performing felt effortless, with no introduction and the performance speaking for itself.

This year it feels like they chose a whole bunch of people to play host and introduce people, creating a ton of needless filler. And what was up with that random performance from Eminem? Bizarre, in my opinion.

Peace,

Mike

I feel they tried too hard to make up for the comparative lack of star power this year in the Best Original Song category by adding extra performances like Eminem (though to be fair, he didn't perform Lose Yourself at the ceremony back when it won). It seems a bit desperate, they should have tried upping the star power in other ways.
