The Slap guarantees it's going to be remembered for that alone, but everything otherwise was a chore to get through. What even was that Bardem/Cruz joke right before the altercation? And that random jab at The Last Duel? Neither ABC or AMPAS can be mad that ratings are dwindling as the ceremony itself moves more and more into becoming a slightly classier version of the MTV Movie Awards each year.

Someone on Twitter put it correctly that "The Oscars seemed like a movie awards ceremony designed by and for people who hate movies"

FWIW I'm pretty sure whenever Smith slapped Rock, everyone at the time assumed it was part of a planned skit. Staged/fake celebrity "feuds" happen at these types of shows all the time for the viral moments, and both Smith and Rock are professionals who have been in the business for decades to the point where they would've mastered moments like this by now. The confusion during the couple of seconds that followed was completely understandable.

If it had occurred early in the show they likely would've escorted him out of the building, but since it was 3/4 through the show and his category was coming up, there was not a whole lot they could've done as they had to suddenly navigate something that was entirely unprecedented. Not to excuse Smith's actions (he absolutely could've found a much better way of handling the situation), but at the end of the day, the majority of the people in that room are entertainers first and foremost and the show, as they say, must go on. The fact that they were able to get through a whole final hour of a ceremony where the energy was zapped from the entire room in a matter of seconds speaks volumes as to what pros these people are.

Will wasn't so apologetic when he was partying it up last night, but I guess the rumored threat of having an Oscar rescinded or an Academy membership revoked makes a person sorry very quickly...

He looked real broken up last night. Apology totally seems legit.

I am appalled by the amount of support Smith is getting in this thread.

I think the term "Toxic Masculinity" applies; the idea that the only way you can show you are a man is violence.

I also think it does not say anything good about the state of fandom that so many fans will defend the object of their fan worship no matter what he or she does.

Would Will Smith really get kicked out of AMPAS or SAG-AFTRA over this considering other actors have done much worse things?

Nah, the reason this particular celebrity altercation is a big deal is because it happened in front of the whole world at the biggest movie industry event of the year. Besides, it's bound to be parodied and featured in montages forever.

Oscar bait ain't what it used to be.

Gone are the days when most people you knew went to see Goodfellas, Forest Gump, Saving Private Ryan and Titanic.

Did the culture change or did the movies?

I would say both but especially the latter. Today's oscar bait is far less accessible and compelling to the general audience.

y'know when Ridley put out two Oscary movies in the fall he probably didn't expect the totally forgotten Demi Moore vehicle he made 25 years ago to get a bigger moment at the ceremony than either of them but here we are.

Do you guys think the Oscars should just have it's own streaming service and do the whole show on there instead of on live tv? Apparently the ratings for this years Oscars were not good, so I feel they just need to accept that the Oscars have become a niche thing. It doesn't seem to really appeal to the casual viewer anymore, and even if they tried to nominate some popular blockbuster/comic book movie it's not going to suddenly turn the casuals into Oscar fans.

I'm all for trying to change things up and improve upon stuff, but sometimes we have to accept that not all content will appeal to everybody. We all have shows we can recommend to people and believe our friends will enjoy, but at the same time we all watch some shows that we personally enjoy but know very well they're not for everyone. And that is what I feel the Oscars have become.

I'm of the opinion they should just put the Oscars on it's own streaming service alongside all the nominated stuff and just stay in its own lane, maybe it's not realistic but thats just my idea of how they could proceed. I mean they can tighten the show up and pull out as many tricks as they want, but if someone isn't a fan of the program then there's not much they can do to suddenly changer their mind. Stick with the fans you got and let everybody else know the day after what won and lost over social media.

Who the hell would want to pay to see it?
