They're mad about A24 waivers. The A-list lead of a movie promoting it only "as a director/producer" was going to be a tough line to walk. Maybe SAG will work something out with all the actor/directors in the coming weeks, or those film festivals will have signed on a bunch of iffy actor-auteur projects for nothing. People view how he was with A Star Is Born as a sign of general awards thirstiness in him, but I don't know if I totally agree. He was in two Best Picture contenders a couple of years ago, hit some precursors for both roles, but was not going full throttle trying for the dual acting nomination, like a truly hungry star would. It was still kind of a Covid awards season, but Andrew Garfield was in a similar position (with buzz for both Tick Tick Boom & The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and he was everywhere that year. lol I refuse to give the spotlight to those who don't do the research and realize that AMPTP doesn't represent the entire entertainment industry. There's plenty of independent producers (not greedy and arguably wildly overpaid types like Iger and Zaslav) that are facing the risk of going bankrupt from being shut down for too long. I'm not sure how likely BCoop would've ever gotten in for his two 2021 performances unless it had been an incredibly dead year for those categories tbh. Nightmare Alley was always seen as GDT's show first and foremost despite the starry cast, while he was basically a glorified cameo in Licorice Pizza. Sometimes it really comes down to whether the role itself is truly nomination-worthy or not.

I read that they were decent but unspectacular. Considering biopics need to truly bomb completely to be counted out for anything (we live in a world where Tammy Faye, of all people, is now an Oscar-winning role in a mid biopic after all), it might still make even if it ends up a minor contender at most, especially when the Makeup Oscar (a win that's actually been quite helpful for an acting victory at recent ceremonies) looks like a given for it. We'll find out in a few weeks at Venice.

Cmasterclay
Quickie with most of the festival lineup currently known and not much else to move - Color Purple seems the last big domino. Picture 1. Oppenheimer 2. Flower Moon 3. Barbie 4. Saltburn 5. Zone of Interest 6. Past Lives 7. Dune 2 8. Anatomy of a Fall 9. Air 10. The Holdovers (I have heard from a trusted source this is probably nomination good but not winner worthy, so I'd drop it a bit if you have it super high). This is a very large number of films that have already screened or been released, but even without accounting for delays, the fall festival schedule doesn't look incredibly stacked. Maybe Napoleon or Maestro is better than I've heard or Color Purple sticks around. I bet The Killer is great but not Academy's cup of tea. Director 1. Nolan 2. Marty 3. Gerwig 4. Glazer 5. Villenvue Alt: Triet, Fennell Actor 1. DiCaprio, Flower Moon 2. Murphy, Oppenheimer 3. Foxx, The Burial (call it a hunch) 4. Cooper, Maestro (more in on him than the movie) 5. Keoghan, Saltburn Alt: Giamatti is the easiest choice, Domingo has a shot, Phoenix or Driver could easily surprise if the movies are better than I expect. Both seem like miscasts Actress 1. Huller, Anatomy of a Fall 2. Bening, NYAD 3. Robbie, Barbie 4. Chastain, Memory 5. Lee, Past Lives Alt: Tough category this year. I'm putting Gladstone supporting for now but if lead she's top two. Mulligan was my first alt. Certainly if Color Purple isn't delayed I think Fantasia takes a spot here. Maybe Spaeny as a lone nominee? Feels like a good category for a woman of color to emerge. Supporting Actor 1. Gosling, Barbie 2. RDJ, Oppenheimer 3. De Niro, Killers 4. Magaro, Past Lives 5. Damon, Oppenheimer (really stuck between him and Plemons as the coattail nom that always happens in this category now) Alt: This is a strong category this year. Tommy Lee Jones was actually my first alt. I could see this being a category with a lone nominee like Hardy in Bikeriders or one of the Dumb Money guys. Eldori gets two bites at this particular apple. Any of the Oppenheimer guys plus Plemons is a potential coattail, as is some of the Air dudes and Yoo. Would be fun if Chris Rock got a nomination, especially in a fairly white year. Supporting Actress 1. Gladstone, Killers (could be lead, where I'd have her second) 2. Pike, Saltburn (I know nothing about her role but this is a true NGNG pick to have her leading here if Gladstone is lead, she's due and it sounds juicky) 3. Huller, Zone of Interest (what a year!!) 4. Swinton, Killer (lone nom) 5. Blunt, Oppenheimer (coattails) Alt: Could see a Barbie girl, specifically America. If Color Purple ends up in this year it could get multiple noms here. This could be a spot for a lone Dune acting nom. Davis for Air remains a legit contender as long as that movie is. Randolph in Holdovers was also a strong look for me.

Plemons has more of a narrative impact, but Damon gets a bit more range as a short-tempered character. It'll probably come down to which film has more buzz when voting happens in a few months.
filmlover
Damon will also have the year-end citations for both Air and Oppenheimer. Possible chance of a double nom if the two movies end up major players.

Interesting about the Holdovers! My friend who saw it described it as very nice and with a great Giamatti performance but rather safe and light. I just don't see the narrative in a year with such big guns. With weaker frontrunners like last couple years possibly.

filmlover
I feel like this is shaping up to be a year where a "lighter" Best Picture winner would actually be quite fitting given the beating the industry is taking from an extended shutdown caused entirely by the greed of the higher-ups. Depends on how the season goes (and how long the strikes last) I suppose.
