Madame Web on sale! I’m sure there will be very calm and non-ironic analysis going on today throughout this forum and Reddit

Dang Madame Webb’s already sold out every single show in my area. Argylle week 2 got canceled for more shows, Oscar ceremony pushed back a month so as not to have to compete with fourth weekend, and they’ve already begun constructing a new theater in my town.

Argylle, counted today for Thursday:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 102 (3 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 73 (6 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 2 (1 showtime)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 6 (3 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 8 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 189 (6 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 251 (5 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 631.

Up ok 31% since last Friday.

Comps (all five films counted on Monday of the release week for Thursday): The 355 (350k from previews) had 118 sold tickets = 1.9M.
Expend4bles (750k) had 130 = 3.6M.
Amsterdam (550k) had 184 = 1.9M
The Menu (1M) had 214 = 2.95M.
And The Beekeeper (2.4M, good walk-ups) had 207 sold tickets = 7.3M.
Napoleon (3M) had on Monday for Tuesday (= 2 days left for Argylle to come closer) 903 sold tickets.
Average at the moment: 3.55M. I think that number will (slightly) go down over the next few days.

The jump could have been bigger and I also have the feeling that it won't have the best walk-ups so hopefully the reviews are good. But I also doubt that it has worse walk-ups than e.g. Amsterdam (1.9M at the moment - of course it could lose a bit in this comp because with already over 600 tickets it's less easy to have good jumps).

Quick anecdotal check and Madame Web may not be as big a train wreck as what I thought before presales started. I guess opening on the Valentine's day does help.

It’s way better than I predicted. Here in NY it’s selling really well and increasing.

And in California doing as good as in NY as well. It’s spider-man IP movie, it will always get a good amount of people into it.

MTC1 subscribers have to watch something with their unlimited tickets...it's why there's always now a floor for the blockbusters, unless they are absolutely hated or off-putting...

I'd be much more interested in how MTC2 is doing...still very few movies opening, so subscribers could decide this is their one movie of the month...but it should give a signal towards more GA acceptance and purchase of the movie...

Looks like Wednesday previews for Madam Webb? and some EA on Tuesday?

Madame Web is selling way better than anyone could predict. In NY for example the Lincoln Square AMC IMAX theater has sold out all the central seats (for the 19h00 screening).

Impressive since tickets were put on sale today.

I did not expect Madame Web to be called a "blockbuster" for sure. if its just the subs boosting, Argylle should have seen some interest as well. It has a good looking cast and a fun action movie theme.

I think its OD rather than previews. No previews for the movie.

Tbf, Lincoln Square sells well for pretty much everything.

Any reason this would be less front-loaded than say The Creator or Napoleon?

I mean, yes? Especially Creator but also Napoleon were a little more serious and - for lack of a more accurate term - "high-brow" in their content (and for Napoleon, the director), in that they appealed more strongly to cinephiles, who drive both early presales and preview nights more generally, than to the more casual/GA crowd. For something like Argylle, a not-taking-itself-too-seriously action/comedy, should do better with walk-ups for Thursday and IM (Creator was one of the few Fall films not to hit a 10x IM)

But given those differences, could just be that your market will overindex on those comps and be softer with Argylle, while a more casual sample (like OK if we had it) would see the opposite. With all of that said, not sure its a given that Argylle connects with the GA and see strong walk-ups; its not the pure disposable action - famous actor kicks ass - flick like Beekeeper (which also was coming off the holidays, keeping early sales lower). I'm not yet seeing the $2.5M preview number that has been thrown out, think it comes in around (if not under) $2M
