well, TFA was at 98M in Japan. Don't know how the previous trilogies have behaved in there (in terms of increase or decrease amongst the three installments). 

 

TFA made 98, then RO made 40, then TLJ made 66 and then Solo made 19M. The "side stories" attract less interest, that's sure. 

TPM made 110, AOTC made 78 and ROTS made 82. 

 

Given that trend, we could expect TROS to go slightly over TLJ 66. And yeah, the 100 seems further away than i imagined.

 

Anyway, Aladdin, TS4, TLK and F2 ... let's go!

SW is a huge brand in Japan ...  but yeah TROS wont do $100 M .. with current trend we can expect little more than TLJ ($66 M)

I'm hoping Weathering With You opens to ¥1B+ at least and finishes with 15B-20B even if that higher end is very unlikely but I hope it gets as close as possible to Your Name.

Naa, just using normal legs this far out. 6th weekend of $5mn, BaTB did $24mn after $3mn weekend (8x), BoRhap did $68mn after $4mn weekend (17x) and Frozen 2 $145mn after $8mn weekend (17x).

 

10x for Aladdin give $135mn Approx.

15x will give $150mn.

Impressive. 3rd highest start behind Yo-Kai Watch 2 (but that movie was only watched by children and slowed down massively after 5 pm) and DC 23.

 

To be fair, keep in mind that Toho cinemas have lower ticket prices today boosting admissions a bit.

To meet in the middle, Pokemon has to double its previous movie, and TS4 has to make only half of TS3. That's not gonna happen.

TLK - $171M - more like half of it

A - $124M - likely, but I'm afraid TLK will kill its late legs

Even at its peak popularity in japan Pokémon movies never came close to Pixar numbers in japan

Which is why I was baffled at some of the Detective Pikachu predictions. Saying $100+ million in Japan was locked despite none of the Pokemon films having come close to that. The novelty of live-action Pokemon did not help in the end, and it performed on par with all the recent animated Pokemon films.

Kinda off topic but somewhat related to Pikachu but are any of you expecting big number for Mortal Kombat or the Mario movie in Japan? Mario is especially big there, wonder if its wide appeal can help it to truly crossover and be the first true video game breakout in the region.

if TLK makes 85m I would be impressed. If I am not wrong even Jungle Book did not hit blockbuster numbers. I am thinking lion king should look for 5-6B Yen rather than 10b+ gross we have seen for Aladdin and expecting for Toy Story.

 

Frozen 2 will drop from 1st movie. But 15B Yen should be good target for it.
