John Carter is an underrated classic. Valerian isn't

Hahaha

Yeah, I guess John Carter IS the classical definition of a movie disaster.  Overbudget, bad plot, bad acting, poor reception, etc, . . . it pretty much checks all the boxes!

That what is "nice" with the few public studio still existing like Liongates/EuropaCorp, were box office talk could be useful, the stock react to the movies (unlike those 30 billion a year in revenue conglomerate that happen to own a movie studio that do movie, but also video games and tv and have their stock drop even when Force Awaken just opened)

It was almost sure that it would open like that, we should have shorted the stock guys.

The only one who greenlit this was Besson himself with the studio he runs.  So no, he's not getting fired.

That depends on the % of control he has. I'm sure stockholders aren't happy.

What's clear is that the company is being poorly run. STX will try to minimize damage by putting blame elsewhere.

Which company are you talking about STX or Europacorp ? Europacorp lost "only" in market cap after that opening flop of a 200m movie, that does not scream being poorly run.

For a while EuropaCorp is owned at 62% by Luc Besson through his company Frontline and at 8.06% by Pierre-Ange Le Pogam; 23% is public.

Now it is in part owned by a China holding:

Besson holding company: 31.58%

China fundamental: 27.9%

That group also had a direct equity stake in the movie itself apparently, not just has co-owner of the production company.

Real Problem for Besson is,if the overseas market does not save it,he is going to have much tougher time getting bank loans and investors for his next 200 Million Sci Fi extravaganza. They are not patrons of the arts;they expect to see a return on their investment.

What puzzles me is how Besson made such bad casting decisions. He usually is very good at casting.but from all accounts he messed up with the leads here. Many critics who overall liked the film thought Valarian (the character) was badly miscast and the chemistry between the two leads was horrible.

This film has shown the chink in the armor of comic book[graphic novel] adapted material.

The fatigue factor is here. Brace yourselves BOT for a chilly 2018 in the CBM blockbuster.

CBM especially SH movies are stronger than ever before. Every SH movie this year has been a success, some huge success as well. The top 3 this summer and the only movies to cross 300 this summer are all going to be SH movies.

2018 promises to be huge with Black Panther, Avenger, The Incredibles, Aquaman and Ant man all coming out. CBM's will be fine
