Really interesting article. Since some months ago I am becoming way more interested in China BO than in US's, and one data said in the article is one of the reasons.

USA has still not been able to give big numbers with non-English language films. On the other side, China is able to release 2 500 local film grossers the same day, a 200m Indian film (Dangal), 2 Japanese making huge numbers (Your name and Doraemon), a Spanish film making nearly 30 million (Contratiempo), and if I am not wrong, some Russian films making over 10 million.

Maybe I am wrong or my memory fails me, but I do not remember so many cases and so big in USA with those conditions.

In 2013, both The Hunger Games: Catching Fire & Frozen released on the same date (Nov. 22). Both did over 400 million (THG:CF 424.7m & Frozen 400.7m). Frozen was in limited release for the first 5 days tho. But it still should count. That's the only example of big breakouts on the same date I can recollect from the recent memory.

Edit: On second thought, it shouldn't really count. THG:CF already made 43.9% of it's final total before Frozen went wide. So this is not a similar situation to that of ORS & DC2.

10 La Cage aux Folles
(France)
MGM $20,424,259 - $18,709 5 3/30/79

The biggest of all in Domestic is in virtually dead languages, aramaic and latin.  The Passion $371m

And Apocalypto is in Mayan at $50m

La Cage was remaid and made $124m. One of the funniest. The Birdcage

RPO down 10%, not a bump but still a great hold, Tuesday and thursday will be interesting

India taking off in China as SH's continues to fade. Will IF fall under $200m?

Definitely my memory is bad... thank you for the data :)

Anyway, I do not think that China will take too long in having a chart with bigger non English films

Aamir Khan is going to blow it away single handed.

Already at $200m, $120m and $18m.

The Passion and Apocalyto were Domestic independent.

Aamir already has the top 5 foreign films combined beat and beating the tights off most SHs

They have built many screens, they will take in whatever fills the seats

About -86% drop. Will miss 100m mark

That is so embarrassing. As we saw with Warcraft as well, people will show up opening weekend but if they don't like the film for whatever reason, the film will wither afterwards. Pacific Rim's issue is that it doesn't over perform in most big markets so China is overly important.

PR2 will make $1m today and tomorrow. It'll drop from 15% of shows to to 4% on Wed. It mite make $5m with holiday help wed to sunday and another $1m next midweek for $98.3m total.  It'll be very close to $100m when it closes

RPO is pacing to to 31m by 1630, the standard midpoint on the day which is sometimes later than 1700.

62-66m down 54-56% DoD. Thats a great WoM hold and indicates 140m+ for thursday. Still on track to clear 1b/$159m by sunday

$200m in the bag. Need to see Tues/Thursday's numbers to determine the odds of $250-300m
