The BFG (Spielberg Attached to Direct) July 1, 2016

Recommended Posts

How can this not make 200 million?  It's directed by Steven Spielberg, adapted from a beloved Roald Dahl book, from the screenwriter of ET and her last film before her passing, having recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance as the giant, and being released by Disney.  Also it has a very high chance of attracting more than just kids.  Adults will go as well.

This is literally a money magnet

Do I have to remind you of Tintin?

Tintin was pretty much unknown to American audiences.  The BFG is much more well known

Also, Tintin didn't have Disney, the writer of ET, or an actor fresh off an Oscar win

I have a hard time seeing this doing 100M. What is the budget? I assume 200M because Disney must Disney. The 4th of July weekend should be one for the ages. Two box office bombs in it.

Plus the whole family schedule for the Summer is a massive fuck up. And join that whatever is happening in June. I hope neither Lionsgate, Universal or Warner Bros move their tentpole releases from June 9.

The Conjuring is going to obliterate Warcraft and NYSM, they'll be lucky to do 30M on OW.

This is Spielberg and his movies usually don't reach a price that astronomical. Considering this has no stars in it and only one notable special effect, it's probably something like $80-90M at most.

I don't think this is expected to be a huge grosser anyway. The Adventures of TinTin made $77M, so I don't see why they would be expecting something substantially more than that.

The weekend of June 10 doesn't look that strong to be honest. The Conjuring 2 could very well be another The Ring 2 (although that opened over $30M so), Warcraft looks like an obvious flop, and Now You See Me 2 seems like yet another unnecessary sequel no one asked for and most won't care about.
