La La Land | Now Playing | Record-Tieing 14 Oscar Noms and Record-Breaking 16 BOFFY Noms

Recommended Posts

It's just possible, but it can only lose one of it's categories (two noms for best song means only 13 wins are possible) and actor is going to Affleck so LLL has to sweep everything else.

I really don't see anything breaking the record without having supporting actor/actress noms too, the smaller awards tend to get spread out a bit more.

Just saw that you're from Vancouver, what part are you from? Personally I grew up on the North Shore, but most of my family there lives wither downtown or out by UBC. What theatre do you usually frequent (if you see movies in the theatre)?

Up until a year ago I lived in the first and Commercial are, now I'm in Richmond.

I'd say I go to the Scotiabank most, International Village a fair amount too since they get a lot of family and smaller movies. I also go to Silvercity Metrotown occasionally and Marine Gateway since it's close by, although it's not a very busy theater and I like a big crowd for certain movies, which is why I like Scotiabank so much.

Can we now unofficially call this overrated in a weak year for awards? It was a cute film but 14 nominations is a joke I'm sorry.

I've yet to see it (maybe I'll really like it!), but this certainly plays into the belief that Hollywood fucking loves movies about itself.

Even though that may be true, in the case of LLL virtually everyone loves it.

There are so many comments that start "I thought I'd hate it since I don't like musicals, but..." that show it is popular with every movie going demographic.

I'm not a big fan of musicals myself, I think I've only seen 4 others in theater.

Les Mis - Meh, not a fan of singing every single line and Crowe was awful.

Moulin Rouge- Didn't care for it at all

Chicago- Liked it, but didn't love it

Mamma Mia- Loved it. Even though it had one of the weakest plots I've ever seen (really just a threadbare excuse to go from one Abba song to the next) but  the performances were enthusiastic and the singing was excellent (not counting Brosnan), especially Seyfried who nailed everything.

I loved the film but totally agree, this having 14 nominations speaks volumes about film production in the US.

Yea scotiabank is where I go when I'm in town too. My family will usually go shopping at pacific centre for hours on end so I'll just head a few blocks over and catch a movie or two.

I have friends in Langley too so when we go there in at the colossus.

It's s self congratulatory film about hollywood. 14 noms is expected. Hollywood adores movies about itself.

It's pathetic & a part of this feeling is why Trump got elected. Celebrities slobbering all over themselves isn't a good look thesedays sorry.

lol trump didn't win because of celebrities lol but it is pathetic I agree.

Actually I would say the sentiment of La La Land and it's nostalgic throwback to musicals to the 30-50's  is a similar sentiment that got Trump elected. People longing for a "better time"

But yeah there's no way this loses this is basically a love letter to hollywood

did I say that?

I actually liked the film somewhat. The ending was great but I thought the singing was mediocre. Also the performances are over rated as wel. It doesn't deserved 14 nominations. It's getting them because hollywood had a collective orgasm over a love letter to hollywood lol.

Please, Trump is a reality TV star "billionaire" celebrity who slobbers all over himself.  It would be hard to find anyone more up their own gilded twittering ass. He just sounds and acts like a vulgar dumbass and talks in soundbites so a lot of people think he's one of them.

La La Land was a technically beautifully made film so I'm not surprised at most of the nominations even if I didn't care for the music and thought it mostly just OK with some great parts.
