I think it's not because Will Smith. It's doing well, despite Will Smith. lol His last 2 movies flopped or underperformed overseas ( After Earth, Focus ), BUT he was really good in Suicide Squad. I guess good marketing strikes a chord everywhere because it evokes the same emotions universally - and fantastical characters as it is seem to belong across nations. For most part, movies that surprised and opened huge, like JW, opened huge in many markets. Even as DP surprised in US it made huge money OS. Whatever reasons the movie will have a good OW in US - Quinn, cool edgy feel of the movie, anit-heroes/rebels, Joker.... - has worked in many places.
