I respect The Godfather more than I actually like it, while the sequel I flat-out love; Michael's arc felt a lot more developed for me personally, and I liked the tighter focus of the story just being between him and his young father - even if the structure was more complicated than the first film.

it's sorta just putting greater emphasis on points i thought were made much cleaner in the first one. michael's whole arc is basically in the first one where he went from good to bad and in the second bad to badder. and the first film contrasts the way he and his father run the family in subtler ways. not that the second is lousy or anything i just think part 1 is a pretty unimpeachable masterwork and part 2 is very good.
