While I still very much enjoy blockbusters, I do agree that many of them are fun, but forgettable. The last blockbuster film that really blew me away was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and to a lesser extent GotG (though Interstellar at least had me thinking about it for days even though I had some issues with it). Thinking about it, 2014 was a great year for blockbusters (and movies in general).

I mean I thought Civil War and Star Trek Beyond were pretty good. I guess my third favorite was... Batman v Superman? Jesus.

And GODS OF EGYPT doesn't count, it's not a blockbuster it's an art film

You consider BvS better than FB and DS?

I thought Batfleck and Eisenberg were a hoot. FB and DS are fine but no real standouts for me. I guess Colin Farrell came closest

Did you not notice Colin's homoerotic scene?! Lucky Ezra.

To add to my thought earlier - people now attack users for their opinions and demand justification. If someone thought, say ID:R was their favorite movie of the year or Arrival sucked, they are no less right or wrong than anyone else. There might be a million different reasons why they liked the movie. It doesn't mean other users should pile up and start demanding justifications.

I admit, we as mods could have done a lot more in the March thru June corridor to make the forums less toxic and more welcoming. I think everyone needed a break after that.

It's also the online critical consensus that every movie is either the "best ever" or "worst ever". Rotten Tomatoes has made it even worse with the aggregation, forcing reviews which discuss movies in-depth to become either fresh or rotten. The binary thinking has made discussion of movies itself suffer.

Also, the theatrical window shrinking, prices increasing and the convenience of renting a movie on like a million VOD platforms has led to a lot of people staying home and deciding "I can wait 3 months to see that on VOD"

I agree. I spent the whole weekend eating and shopping at highly rated venues with people who care very much what other people think. They are affraid to watch any movie unless it both appeals to them and has a high RT rating. As expected, the only few films they watch a year are Disney.  They list Mad Max as the only time RT failed them, and the only reason to apply their own sensibilities when evaluating a movie so that they don't waste their time with unsafe movies. Anecdotal, but still scary when considering the potential damage of the RT filter...

I loved Alison Sudol as Queenie, I wasn't as keen on Tina because she was more uptight.

I think having Jacob as the audience surrogate worked, it was great to see an No-Maj adult introduced to this world.

Jacob was definitely the audience favourite, he got a huge reaction. Not surprising though, he was an absolute blast. Him and Queenie displayed some of the best on-screen chemistry in a long time.

Everybody should check out The Handmaiden. Very strong period piece drama with some fun twists by the director of Old Boy, and interesting presentations of various soft-to-moderate pornography both explicit and implicit. Fifty Shades of Whatever sucks in comparison. Along with Train to Busan and The Wailing, the Koreans have had some great stuff this year.

Or wait for your next boring blockbuster.

Train to Busan shat on everything Marvel has done.

He really needed to just turn on that Ray Velcoro switch when talking to the Orphans, I felt it simmering underneath, but never quite got there.

Agreed, which is why I was disappointed when

Spoiler

when Jacob was forced to forget everything, even if he did get a happy ending. Hopefully they'll somehow be able to bring him back for the sequels.

ST:B was good, but not as good as the previous two. Civil War was one of the best Marvel movies, but that's not saying much. I liked the dark themes in BvS, but the movie had some problems. Gods of Egypt... let's not go there. Warcraft was... let's not go there either. ID:R... hell no.

There were movies I enjoyed though: Pets, TJB, Apocalypse.
