Looks like BatB is about to break the $500m-Milestone over Memorial Day. Summer Weekdays should even push it to $505m in the end.

I think we'll have to see the effect of the early Blu-ray release on June 6th. Many films drop like a rock after home release.

As long as it crosses 500M before Blue Ray, I don't care how much over it makes after. Tremendous run. :)

The original came out during the summer season when daily grosses are significantly bigger in comparison to May. In this sense, it will be highly misleading to suggest or imply that Vol. 2 is on the same multiplier trajectory as the original GOTG movie. On the other hand, Vol. 2 had a much bigger OW which largely explains for its higher rate of decay.

That's not entirely true. When summer has bigger weekdays it also has lesser weekends. The increases are not nearly as large on the weekends as they are when it's not summer. So it's perfectly acceptable to compare a movie that came out in August with a movie that came out May. They had the identical drops.

Sword In The Stone did well at the box office, but just four years later "Camelot"  which is sort of a sequel ( both are based on T.H. White's novel "The Once And Future King") was a  expensive flop for Warners.

At the time, critics noted that the animation in SATS was not nearly as good as in Disney's previous films. That was because "Sleeping Beauty" was a disappointment at the box office, barely making it's money back, and Disney decided to cut back on the costs of future animated features. Or rather, Walt's brother Roy, who actually ran the business end of the studio, convinced Walt to cut back. Roy saw the animated features as an expensive gamble when those Disney live action comedies cost next to nothing to make and were sure fire money makers.

There were definently two classes of Disney's animated features:Those that Disney saw had rerelease potential, and those that did not. The Latter could be sold to TV as Disney "Special Events" or used for the weekly Disney TV show. SATS was one of the latter.

That's where xerography came in for, and that's how was able to keep costs down around that period.

Also SATS actually got a re-release in the 1983, but not much else beyond that apparently.

Everything above GOTG Vol. 2 on this chart has hit at least $400M

Below it, the only ones that hit it are Rogue One, Dead Man's Chest, Dark Knight Rises, Toy Story 3, and the Hunger Games, although those had huge summer, december, or thanksgiving weekdays.

$350-400M is a sure bet.(I know, that's a Deadline range)

Not only is that post mostly offensive, but it's not even right.  Her fan base is much more aligned by worldview than anything else.  And there's nothing wrong with a comic having a go-to fan base.  Few comics seek to be (or even can be) "universal audience" comics, and some have broader or narrower bases even amongst the non-universal set.

I admit to not being one of her fans, but I'm not gonna tear down her fans just b/c they like her.  I admit I don't like a lot of things others do (and I like a lot of things others don't - I was a superhero fan before it was cool to be a superhero fan.  I still have the "lovingly read" ripped up, passed down from my mom, 1960s Action and Batman comics to prove it!)

Is it the only May opener with the second w/e falling on MD?

Good question. The answer is no - of those top 25 films on the list I made, the following films also had Mother's Day on their second weekend:

  • Avenger’s: Age of Ultron
  • Iron Man 3
  • Spider-Man
  • Spider-Man 3

Looking at them all, I'm not sure that Mother's Day really helped these films, or at least helped negligibly, in terms of their second weekend drops. Same with GOTG Vol. 2, I'm wondering how much Mother's Day really played a role. It's Sunday drop of 25% is in keeping with it's opening weekend Sunday drop of 24%. So again, I think it may have helped somewhat, but not to a significant extent.

Father's day weekend definitely helps - of those films in the top 25 second weekends of all time, Jurassic World was helped considerably by Father's Day (dropping only 1.9% on Sunday).

Of the other films in the top 25, The Force Awakens, Avatar, and Rogue One all had Christmas holiday weekends (though in the case of Rogue One, the box office dampening Christmas Eve fell on the Saturday, so it makes it more of a wash). And Shrek 2 benefited from it's second weekend being Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Peace,

Mike

Disney is already #1 DOM with just 2 movies released this year.

It should be able to maintain the #1 until Ragnarok (unless DM3 or Fox/WB whole slate overperform or both Pirates/Cars bomb) which is kinda nuts considering they'd only have 4 movies by November.

Ragnarok + Coco should outgross JL, so they'll most likely win the year even without TLJ.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Because a movie released in August will make a higher % of its total on weekdays compared to a movie released in May, it's natural for the August movie to tend to steeper weekend declines. In other words, it's much more impressive for a film to decline by 55% in August than it is for a May film to drop by the exact same amount.

The original Guardians, is still the leggiest of any MCU movie (and by some margin) with a 3.53 multiplier. Its sequel currently in release won't come anywhere near that multiplier number. I was just making this clarification. It also doesn't need to do be that leggy, since it has had a much bigger OW (55%)

More apt comparisons for GOTG2, are the other MCU movies released in early May, like Iron Man 2 (59.4%) Iron Man 3 (58.4%) Civil War (59.5%) and Ultron (59.4%) The first Iron Man and first Thor had much better 2nd weekend drops of less than 50%, but that was a different era.

I very much doubt Ragnarok will outgross JL and Coco has no chance in hell no matter how good it is. I'm certainly not a DC fanboy, but IMO people are underestimating JL (domestically, at least).
