The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Interesting thing for Demon Slayer vs Mortal Kombat - both of my Cinemarks have put premium prices on the regular showings, so at one Cinemark, it's $15.75/ticket for DS and $12.75 for MK - $3/ticket premium on every 2d ticket is a lot. The other Cinemark has also put premium prices on regular showings, so it's $16.75 for DS vs $15.25 for MK - $1.50/ticket premium on every 2d ticket.

Just another thing to note - DS may have premium pricing, even if not in premium showings - not sure if it's the subbed and dubbed charges, or just b/c they know fans will pay it...

DS+MK over GvK 5day time 👀

A bit too high to hope for considering the top 10 during GvK weekend "only" made 43m+. What have notably improved during this 3 week are the increment of capacity in LA to 50% and additional 58 cinemas from Regal. The higher vaccination is offset by the surge in recent week, therefore the fear factor should remain unchanged.

Not sure if that is enough to lift top 10 grosses total to 60m.  If not, I don't know how terrible the hold must be from holdovers to make DS+MK>48.1m

If a majority of reserved seats are for DS, then I guess a majority of PWPs for openers that weekend are also for DS. Would be nice to get more clarity, but c'est la vie

AMC and Cinemark aren’t offering DS PWPs(at least in Denver but I assume it’s chainwide). Only Harkins is

This is for DS alone?? Too much weeb

it has strong D2 sales despite having low number of shows and that will change looking at the sales. I did not post Day 2 numbers yesterday but here you go.

Demon Slayer D2 (this is as of yesterday afternoon)

MTC1 - 37732/204196 486718.00 1315 shows

MTC2 - 28031/156395 382481.45 1189 shows

Very good despite losing Imax to MK and having small show count. I think that will change looking at the PS.

I was thinking 20+ for MK from the trend in Denver and Philly, but that may be harder with DS seeming to really break out.

That would be really good considering seating limitations. I do see MK having double the shows compared to DS Day 2. Its going to be interesting. I will try to get MK to see how they compare.

 Godzilla vs Kong(T-6)

 MTC1 - 49220/444881 695093.00 2359 shows(322 theatres)  +5480 //377 shows have not sold any tickets

 MTC2 - 48247/406592 547960.22 2685 shows (260 theatres)  +4416 //433 shows have not sold any tickets.

Another solid day. I think somewhere around double this number is possible with current shows. But it will add more shows as well. If I have to guess I am thinking 150K MTC1 and 130K MTC2 finish. Without Regal, I would say that would be at least 50-60% the overall BO(so around 6-7m OD). But I could be wrong as its hard to predict during COVID.  There are also PWP and so overall BO will be higher.

Demon Slayer (T-7)

MTC1 - 35756/205643 535563.00 1128 shows (243 theatres) // 119 sellouts and 187 shows sold no tickets

MTC2 - 40619/257476 567820.98 1883 shows (269 theatres) //  172 sellouts and 280 shows sold no tickets

Almost at GVK levels despite release being lot smaller. I expect show counts to go up for sure. Let us see how things go.

PWP for next thursday MTC1: 175 MTC2: 254

Demon Slayer (T-6)

MTC1 - 41350/259225 616981.00 1425 shows(284 theatres) +5594 // 134 sellouts and 257 shows have not sold any tickets

MTC2 - 46305/263214 644927.67 1935 shows(271 theatres) +5686 // 170 sellouts and 185 shows have not sold any tickets

Sold few more tickets compared to GVK at the same point. Need more shows to be added for sure. I think that will happen in final few days. Also interesting thing is average ticket price is higher for DS looking at both MTC and few others have commented about increased ticket price for this movie. So overall BO is higher at 2 MTC with fewer ticket sales.

I checked AMC Empire and did not see an option for DS PWP and so may be PWP will not be a factor. So its better to compare BO without PWP(we have to extrapolate based on numbers seen). I think 7-8m OD is possible.

I would be cautious though, I don't expect the late bumps to be nearly as strong as GvK since that had more GA appeal. This will be a very fan-heavy film.

You could be right. GVK did 4.9 million between 2 MTC on tracked theatres. That translated to 8.7m without PWP(I estimated OD PWP around 1m). I expect ratio for DS could be lower if more Regal locations are open. It was a guess and I will wait until day before release before reestimating the OD.

Also its unfortunate Arclight cinemas have permanently closed :-( it was crazy to see 950 seat show at hollywood sellout for big movies.

https://www.arclightcinemas.com/. Effect COVID is permanent. BO records wont be so easy to beat looking at number of theatre closures.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The booking cost for a classic movie is only $99.99, and the price for a new release is $250.

Never change, Regal, never change. :hahaha:

(posting coz I don't believe it had been mentioned in this thread yet)

And, for the non-trackers who might want a few yuks as well.

I guess at this point I should try to see if we can dig anything up on Broly and MHA 2019.

I did. Back then folks were just using pulse. Nothing really important there.

@Eric Bombay dropped the ball by not tracking it officially in his sheet so we cant really speak on how it trended in pre-sales. Good Job Eric!!!!

Alas, I was one of the few kids who did not grow up on anime/Toonami, so I truly did not care about these movies. That's what happens when you mainly watch Nickelodeon cartoons. Although really, I think I dodged a bullet. There's no way I'd survive if I was a weeaboo
