The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

It all begins tonight stateside with Disney/Marvel’s Black PantherMany are now projecting that the movie could easily surpass $180M over three-days, and if that’s the case, it won’t just be the best February and President’s Day opening of all-time, but the best pre-summer debut (prior to May) beating Disney’s own Beauty and the Beast which began with $174.7M last March.

1 hour out:

7:00: 96/113 (+3)

7:15 3D: 36/69 (+14)

7:30: 55/78 (+4)

7:45 3D: 46/78 (+1)

8:00 3D: 31/60 (+9)

8:15: 50/78 (+8)

8:30: 34/63 (+5)

8:45: 34/78 (+7)

9:15: 45/78 (+8)

Total: 428/695 (+59)

It's pacing at 150% of Ragnarok at the same point in time (184.1M) and 125% of its final total (153.4M) :ohmygod: There's a 7:25 showing of Maze Runner that's currently empty, so I think a last minute cancellation might happen there. They could also play a show at 9:30 in the biggest auditorium after Fifty Shades if they feel like paying employees overtime

Nothing here is really shocking, though Jumanji and Showman's holds should make all of you realize how little they'll be dropping (ESPECIALLY the former) this weekend. Showman's main TC hit should come next weekend.

Something I have noticed, but unlike your typical massive uber blockbuster, I find presales swing wildly between theatres in my area.

Theaters that have a much bigger minority client base are having an insane level of presales while other theatres are having rather solid pre-sales for this film.

Now I am unsure what this means but I am not buying it can open as large as TA/TDK and such.

I'm saying around or slightly lower than TA/TDK attendance through 4 days, so that would still be below TA/TDK's pace.  Actually depending on 3D split, even 250M through 4-days might be lower than TA/TDK 3-day attendance.

Is it true that Samson is outselling Black Panther everywhere?

Yes. I hear that many theatres are dropping Black Panther screens so they can get extra prints of Samson as well.

I'm also hearing reports of state governments calling state of emergency, having to stop the swarms of crowds begging to be let into the auditoriums.

I have to kinda eyeball it since I wasn't keeping as detailed notes for Rogue One, but I think Black Panther has passed Rogue One in overall seat sales tonight in Sacramento! :o  If not, it's neck and neck.

R1 had more sellouts (35 v 26), but BP had more theaters at front two rows or less (8 vs 26).

Rogue One did have more showings for Thursday by a handful, but I'm just sayin' there might be a chance for a 30+m preview night for Black Panther if it is running neck and neck or even blipping past Rogue One.

PS: Don't yell at me if I just jinxed it.
