The only two important movies of the year.

Spoiling them is like endorsing Al-Qaeda.

For those of us who don't know anything about IT's spoilers, that is the the sacred movie. Spoiling IT = endorsing ISIS.

Interestingly Minions is going to be the best comp for Spidey.

It also opened in July with a similar ~116m ow.

That it was front-loaded for an animation and did 2.9x is what makes it a great comp for a CBM with good wom.

It fell 57.4% in 2nd weekend and 53.5% in 3rd weekend. Still did 2.9x thanks to July weekdays (and later recovery).

So even if Spidey falls close to 60% in 2nd weekend and close to 55% in 3rd weekend, 2.7-2.8x cannot be ruled out. Such is July/August.

Yeah I think summer weekdays will be strong enough that it won't fall below 2.6x. Even more support for this point is that TDKR pulled a 2.79x despite dropping 61.4% in its 2nd weekend.

We should permaban anyone who spoils First Man next year.  I want to stay in suspense if they make it to the moon or not.

Same person who will spoil Detroit for everyone in a few weeks.

Yes people love the Thor Ragnarok trailer more than the Last Jedi trailer 900 million domestic confirmed!

This is going to be Thor the Dark World all over again. I remember the wild over predictions for that movie.

I think only Star Wars fans like me loved The Last Jedi trailer at Star Wars Celebration. It was a brilliant trailer and I'm rooting for Rian Johnson to succeed.

I don't know about boost it over $200M+ OW DOM but it did collect just under $180M OW DOM. Definitely huge increase over Winter Soldier's $95M OW DOM.

I mean that prior to release, the expectations for the film spiked to an absurd degree.

BoxOffice.com predicted a 215m OW. This was preceded by long range forecasts of 213/605, 200/550, 182/490, and 167/435. So in the final month before its release, their OW expectations went up $50m, and the total gross went up 170m.

And it's not just them!

BOM predicted 210, while saying, "When it comes to Captain America: Civil War the question as to whether it will hit $200 million or not seems to be of little dispute." and then noting, "The film also offers audiences their first look at Tom Holland as Sony's new Spider-Man". It was guaranteed to hit 200.

Even Guru, who tends to be quite conservative in his predictions, went for 185m. I don't know if there's an available way to see his predictions columns, though, because they aren't in his archive.

So it wasn't just MCU fanboys pumping it up. The hype was basically everywhere. This was the massive course correction from AoU. And it had Spider-Man! Finally in the MCU! It was going to go amazing. The thought was that a good Avengers film (regardless of the title) + Spider-Man = Avengers business, I guess.

It didn't work out like that. And I think in the past year the view on CACW has cooled quite a bit. I don't hear people regale me about how amazing tight the writing is, a sort of next level work in terms of cinematic storytelling. But at the time, I remember the reception, which was great, and the trailers, which were well received, ESPECIALLY that Spidey reveal, and the hype and the insistence that it was going to be huge.

And it was huge... just not "huge". Its legs were pretty lackluster for its opening. Not bad, but not great, either.

Which, honestly, makes me think about this weekend. Because SMH has the reviews, and the good trailers, and the hype, and the insistence that it was going to be huge. And it's huge. Just not "huge".

I always thought that Civil War's poor legs were due to the fact that, outside of that 20-minute sequence, it's just not a fun movie.  In fact, it's kind of a downer, with perhaps the most intentionally ambivalent climax in the history of superhero films.  Is there another one that has a climax that does not feature our hero(es) fighting a bad guy?

It's probably completely unique in that sense, certainly for the MCU, and maybe for the genre as a whole.  I saw both Avengers films 5 times in theaters, but Civil War only twice.  It's not really the kind of experience I think audiences felt the need to repeat.

Homecoming is an entirely different ball of wax, IMO.  It's an enormous crowd-pleaser.

Civil War's legs were pretty damn awful. It opened $20m above TDK and finished $125m below TDK. It had a worse 5-day multiplier than TF2, a movie with awful legs to begin with. Barely better legs than DH2

Can't blame critics or audience WOM either. Very similar to DH2 in that regard. Some blamed piracy. But I think the episodic aspect is what hurt the most. You really did need to see the other MCU movies in order to fully appreciate Civil War.
