Fox searchlight never had 2k release for a single oscar nominated BP film since 2011, and they never actually handle "two" still in wide release BP nominees since the expansion of the BP field.

Not sure how this can affect their distributing commitment to the shape of water and 3B once they both got their BP nomination on next Tuesday....

I hope both can get at least 1.5k theater next weekend since both posses significant drawing power in the post X-mas/NY holiday period

Still not seeing any Friday numbers for I, TONYA... so I'm also interested in what @EmpireCity has to say...

Neon and 30WEST took the acclaimed I, Tonya to 796 theaters after a very slow roll-out that has already netted the biopic/dramedy $11.65 million. That’s more than triple Colossal and Ingrid Goes West’s respective $3.5m domestic totals. So, this one is already a big winner for the new-ish distributor, and that’s including very likely Oscar nominations on Tuesday for Margot Robbie (Best Actress and, as one of the producers, a possible Best Picture nominee) and Allison Janney (for Best Supporting Actress). It will earn around $2.875m for a new $14.5m cume.

Manville will happen.

Image result for we'll see about that gif

Either way, that's not gonna be enough to give Phantom Thread much of a box office boost, if any, from what it's making now without a Best Picture nomination (which it's not getting at this point). The films that are actually nominated (Lady Bird, Three Billboards, Shape of Water, CMBYN, etc.) will be the ones that get the benefits.

I made plans to see Greatest Showman Friday night. I need to see why middle aged women people love it so much.

Not true - my daughter & her friends are in college & loved it - I think all ages are going to see this now.

Interesting photo finish from Friday’s numbers. Although I think Jumanji will be about $18-$19 million this weekend. Then Den Of Thieves and 12 Strong will be at least $15 million each which isn’t bad for modest budget movies. Showman’s legs are insane after that debut I thought $70 million would be the highest it would go, and it’s proving to be a very leggy performer for the weeks to come.

They sure are marketing the fuck out of Phantom Thread. TV spots, billboards, bus ads, the whole deal. Focus tends to go all out. They did the same with The Beguiled last year. Not sure how they're making a profit.

I saw an ad during The Assassination of Gianni Versace few days ago yelling at the viewer to "see Daniel Day-Lewis in his final film!" I had to laugh.

That's a pretty good theater average for Den of Thieves.  12 Strong did about what I expected.  Interesting that the Post drops to 4th in its second weekend.  It's going to have a nice drop this weekend and perhaps it has a shot at 70 million.  More, if it does some major damage at the oscars.  What more can be said about Jumanji?  I don't think it will hit 400 but it's going to be really close.  As for TLJ, yep, it crosses 600 and no one cares.  Such a ho hum reaction to a film that is going to finish 5th or 6th of all time.  Insidious looks like it's going to finish around 65-68 million and you can bet they are going to dfind another key and make a 5th film.  Way better results than most thought it would achieve.

Forever Your Girl had about zero promotion to it, at least in my part of the world.  The only reason I know about it is because Jessica Rothe is in it, and it is her follow up to Happy Death Day.

Fuck You Greatest Showman.

The Commuter will end with about 40 million or so, another okay effort from Neeson.

Too bad Molly's Game didn't do better.  Same with I, Tonya.  Two fantastic films with incredible performances by the two female leads.

And Proud Mary collapses.

Join me in nominating it for most soul crushing BO run and Worst feature

I'm glad that Paddington had such a good hold, especially considering the Godawful opening. One can hope that it's an even lower drop than that (sub 20%). Even if it misses P1's total, a 5x multiplier would be proof that these movies can still have an audience in NA. With a better release date and more promotion, they can do a lot better than this.

Jumanji and TGS continue to be absolute monsters. Jumanji may challenge a 400M gross, while TGS could do 10x its 5-day opening, and come not too far from its 6-day. That is mindblowing on both accounts.

12 Strong and Den Of Thieves also outperforming my expectations, especially Den. Between these two + Insidious, January has had a boom of adult-oriented stuff.

Could? It will definitely happen. By Sunday, it will be at $113M+ and it only needs $21M there to get to that benchmark. I'm thinking a final total of $150M+ with a strong chance of beating La La Land.
