Everything about this shining sequeel works except all the things that link iT to the shining. Some scenes iT was just sooo bad and iT felt that they Were ridiculing that masterpiece. All the other parts were absolutely phenomenal but man that third act is so not good

Deadline reported that the budget was in the $50Ms.

Either way, it's probably not going to make its budget back, domestically speaking. Big yikes, considering we're talking about a studio who usually nails horror films (It, Conjuring universe etc. ).

Warners was so keen on Doctor Sleep that movie studio chief Toby Emmerich had already struck a deal with director Mike Flanagan and his Intrepid Pictures to script a sequel whose working title is Hallorann, drawn from the character who appears in both The Shining and Doctor Sleep.

Box office analysts say Doctor Sleep ran too long (roughly 151 minutes) and that many members of the millennial and Gen Z generations aren't necessarily familiar with The Shining (1979), which was directed by Stanley Kubrick and starred Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall.

"The Shining, despite being a cult classic, just doesn’t have traction with younger audiences. Thirty-nine years was just too long between sequels," says Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, but yeah, I guess it makes sense in hindsight why it's so disappointing at the box office. The Shining really isn't that big a deal - or even a known quantity - for millenials/Gen Z'ers, which makes this sequel really pointless (in their eyes).

Looking forward to reading the book!

BR2049 redux. BR clearly had smaller traction with GA than believed. Not all cult classics have widespread appeal. people may know about them but that doesn't mean they care.

I think Kubrick's Shining is too famous/iconic even among the GA to be still considered a cult classic. It's just that it's been completely seperated in everyone's mind from the source material and not just because of King's hatred towards it. The people that hate Kubrick's version the most are the biggest fans of the book and many of the people that love it haven't even read it. Even with all the visual callbacks to Kubrick's movie, this never felt like a "real" sequel to a lot of people.

Fucking hate Kubrick and his ugly "cult" movies so much that I couldn't even make myself see a free torrent of The Shining; stopped it after 5 minutes.

His only good movie is the NASA financed "Landings on the Moon", at least it got something interesting going about it.

Too bad Dr. Sleep (a very nice movie) had to associate itself with such utter garbage like The Shining. So it is paying the price now.
