Surprised this wasn't released in line with Halloween. Reviews seem solid. Expecting a crowd pleaser for the genre at least. Can this do 100+ DOM?

My guess is that WB didn't want to go head to head with Terminator but also didn't want to eat into Joker's audience.

Saw an advance screening of this last night. I don't see this being very audience-friendly for a number of reasons (the length, lack of traditional jump scares or just scares in general), but I have to commend Flanagan for his commitment to telling character-driven horror stories, though this plays more like a psychological thriller. The time spent with the antagonists (The True Knot) in particular was so pleasing, and Rebecca Ferguson crushes it as you would expect.

Overall I would recommend this with some reservations, but I would be intrigued to revisit it at some point because, as he demonstrated with The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan has probably left some neat easter eggs or subtle visual motifs lingering throughout.

knowing the director's past track record I was expecting better reviews (Gerald's Game was amazing) but they seem to be decent enough I guess.

does anyone know if you need to watch the original Shining to understand this sequel?

Having read the book Doctor Sleep, it would be very helpfull for you if you watched the Shining. Id say its necessary for the best possible experience.

Also: Why woudnt you watch The Shining? Its one of the best films of all time.
