I am sure similar things were said about westerns during the 1960s and rom coms during the 90s.

But the 90's look like this:

1999 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace $983.6
1998 Armageddon $553.7
1997 Titanic $2,128.9
1996 Independence Day $817.4
1995 Toy Story $373.6
1994 The Lion King $858.6
1993 Jurassic Park $983.8
1992 Aladdin $504.1
1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day $519.8
1990 Ghost $505.7

Not a lot of rom coms at the top.

The biggest difference is that most of those were original movies or first adaptations instead of endless sequels/franchise spin-offs.

AQM isn't gonna miss 850 ww imo.

Even 875 ww doesn't require very optimistic thinking looking at current grosses,

250 dom

275 ch

350 os-ch

= 875 ww

That is pessimistic at this point. We haven't had many updates for overseas but Aquaman seems to dominate there even more than in the US. Curious to see OS-C numbers.

Yeah, the low-end is already $950m WW.

I guess MPR's run is fine if you look at it through the lens of a musical, but I still can't help but believe Disney did expect huge things. Reactions do seem to be somewhat divisive. Lots of people either love it or hate it it seems.

CBM mania has officially reached a level I'm not sure has ever been seen for any genre at the box office before. I don't believe the GA would have been so easily willing to give AQM's cringey dialogue and cliche plot/characters a free pass in spite of the visuals for it to be doing this well even a year ago. Same goes for what happened with Venom. I think BP and IW seem to have shifted the CBM craze into a full blown monster. I'm legitimately concerned for the future of non-CBM big budget films right now. If this only escalates in 2019 and studios see that's all that can really make big bank, pretty soon all the studios are going to give up on tentpoles outside of superheroes. We may have a truly massive genre over saturation headed our way.

Once you understand superhero movies is not a genre, you will realize the superhero over saturation won't happen.

It's a genre though, Some type of Action-movies, where some unrealistically overpowered person saves the day against villains that are even stronger.

The underlying trend with SH movies is clear. There is absolutely nothing to suggest a turnaround anytime soon.

Of course nobody has a crystal ball, and consumer preferences do change, but as things stand, SH movies look like the best bet for many years to come. People have been predicting a superhero fatigue for more than a decade now, and all that has happened is that SH movies have become even more insanely popular all over the world. These are the facts.

Where is Bohemian? Is it 20th Fox has fully immersed themselves in the holiday season and don't bother to give an estimate?

Or They really drop that much of screen out of Bohemian? If that is the case, they really have no idea how to defend the screens, it is not like they have multiple blockbusters they need to take care of in the season.

Aquaman with the 6th best Christmas Day ever, and 5th best for movies not opening on Christmas. The movies ahead of it:

Force Awakens ($49.3M), Last Jedi ($27.4M), Rogue One ($25.8M), Sherlock Holmes ($24.6M) (Opened on Christmas), and Avatar ($23M).

Even though the films sucked and didn't make as much money as they should have, I would argue that both Wonder Woman and now Aquabro benefitted heavily from being introduced beforehand in BvS and JL.

NOT starting anything but it is VERY clear that their floors were much higher than pretty much all of Marvel phase 1 origin films, wondering if that has something to do with it.

Westerns and romcoms couldn't adapt to the changing market conditions like superhero movies could. That's why they faded out.

Everybody knew WW. Aquaman was quite known too, even if it was considered a "joke" by a lot of people.

DC had a HUGE advantage over Marvel for decades (which had mostly Spider-Man and the X-Men)
