Hollywood Reporter is saying On the Basis of Sex did $442K yesterday for a $13K average from 33 theaters. That seems like a great start, especially since it should have no problem appealing to a mainstream audience when it expands wide January 11. Could be a mini sleeper hit.

Β

Destroyer did $10K from 3 theaters for an average of $3,300. This is obviously going nowhere.Β

destroyer had an average of $10,000.Β

Gotti?Β

Audiences loved Gotti but critics don’t want you to see it… The question is why??? Trust the people and see it for yourself!

Cavill, to me, is obvious and a good MOS 2 would be another possible billion grosser. Affleck, on the other hand, tough to say.

I thought Cavill quit. Or is that just a rumour?

Suddenly, it's looking very good for the DCEU.Β

Β

Should they just bring back Cavil & Affleck?Β

Media and bloggers keep saying Reeves don't want Affleck so who knows.Β

Β

This might be an upopular opinion but DC can have 10 straight hits at the box office and they will never take it to the next level until they course correct Batman and Superman. Those two are the pillars of DC. I'm glad Aquaman and Wonder Woman are succesful but DC needs their big boys.

I mean, save your money for something else but there are a few things in the film that you just gotta see to believe it.

Β

Spoilers for the film (if anyone really cares to know):

Β  Hide contents

There is an out of nowhere impromptu musical number towards the third act of the film written by Alan Menken. It was truly astonishing.

Β

Oof nearly forgot about that. Β Also, Rebecca Hall looked completely dead. Β I feel like she was trying to give a monotone performanceΒ

That social media manager needed a raise and a promotion asap if the film's production company, MoviePass, wasn't imploding in front of our very eyes lmao

Batman and Superman are overexposed. Superman hasn't been a huge hit inΒ ages.

Β

Also, Reeves doesn't want Affleck but that doesn't apply to other DCEU movies like BoP, Batgirl, SS2, etc.

Cavill just starred in the best blockbuster of 2018 by a country mile, so DC would be dumb to let him go. Affleck clearly doesn't care anymore, and it's going to take him a while to get back into shape considering the age he's at right now

Mission Impossible is Tom Cruise's franchise. Cavill got paid 7 digits and his character is dead. He has no leverage in negotiations. He is not a box office draw and should not be making demands.Β

Β

And Affleck is getting in shape. If Batman starts filming in the summer, he has plenty of time to get in shape.Β

We going to have 2 actors play Batman in the same universe? That would be weird.

I suggest you take a look at photos of Ben lately, he's built like a tank. He just wrapped O'Connor's Torrance by the way. Also, interesting that Ella Jay Basco who plays Cassandra Cain in Birds Of Prey liked a tweet basically saying "so excited for Ben Affleck to return as Batman". Intriguing to say the least. Also, the main rumor is that Reeves wants a younger Batman, other insistent rumors from reliable sources indeed say that Reeves doesn't want him and the baggage (of the other films presumably) but that Ben and other WB execs are keen on him returning. Doesn't mean that Reeves won't change his mind (hell, Ben can look late thirties with a good shave and in top shape) or that the door won't be open (as Reeves' film will take place way before) for Ben to return.

Β

About Cavill, several similar sources say that his agent (also The Rock's agent) pushed too hard for Henry to get more leverage, more money, a say on the director, script, that kind of thing, and WB didn't like this one bit and basically shut the door in their face but the feeling as Henry's IG post at the time indicated, is that he still very much wants to be Superman. Momoa also said this during the Aquaman press tour, could be WB telling him to say that, who knows. But this is on WB for now, and since there's apparently zero plan, from those same insiders, for MOS2......Β

Β

We'll see, hopefully WB execs come to their senses.Β

What kind of drops can we expect for tomorrow?

Β

Β

Β

Very small drops in the 5-20% range, for some films maybe even slight increases. Boxing Day is huge.

I am sure similar things were said about westerns during the 1960s and rom coms during the 90s.

I thought some more about that.

Β

Westerns and romcoms couldn't adapt to the changing market conditions like superhero movies could. That's why they faded out.

Like cookie said, plus:

I think it wasn'tonly that they couldn't adapt, probably more impactful: the audience wouldn't accept the tries to adapt.

Β

Like The Misfits

Quote

The Misfits failed to meet expectations at the box office, and has been historically referred to as a "box office disaster" of its day.[7]

They got their money back later, but it was seemingly too 'modern

Β

Western too had their genre mix like SH,... whatever movies. Bu in a way they were also more narrow per mix in the expectations of the audience IMHO. Like 'clean' behaviour....

Β

But also a lot of other movies / genres got released at the same times, like crime, war, historical, spy, thriller, .....

To stay with 1961 (see Misfits), that year saw successful releases like e.g.:

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Westside Story

The Parent Trap

The Hustler

Judgment at Nuremberg

The Guns of Navarone

El Cid

One Hundred and One Dalmatians

Lover Come Back

King of Kings

Come September

Blue Hawaii

Splendor in the Grass

Β

= not one of those is a Western

Β

Β

but also Western like

The Last Sunset

The Comancheros

One-Eyed Jacks

....

It will surpass BvS

That is pessimistic at this point. We haven't had many updates for overseas but Aquaman seems to dominate there even more than in the US. Curious to see OS-C numbers.

My guess Wednesday (26th Dec)Β to Tuesday (1stΒ Jan)

14.0Β (-37%) // 26th DEC -Β Wed

12.5Β (-11%) // 27th DEC -Β Thu

13.0Β (+4%) // 28th DEC -Β Fri

14.5 (+11%) // 29th DEC -Β Sat

12.5 (-14%) // 30th DEC -Β Sun; 40 2nd weekend

8.5 (-32%) // 31st DEC - Mon

12.5Β (+47%) // 1stΒ JAN -Β Tue

= 87.5

Β

In 2012 Hobbit1 added 65 more after a 48.3 5-day (28th DEC FriΒ - 1st JAN Tue). Here have figured a 61 5-day for AQM and Hobbit1's legs (adding 1.35x the 5-day)Β would give it 82 more. However it was Hobbit1's 3rd weekend opposed to AQM's 2nd weekend and multipliers off subsequent weekends tend to be better.Β  So using 70Β more (1.15x the 5-day) after 1st Jan for a total of,

106Β cumeΒ as of 25th DECΒ +

87.5 7-day cumeΒ (26th DEC to 1st JAN) calculated above

70Β after 1st JAN

= 263.5 dom

Β

Using only Hobbit1 as a comparison does not embolden one's case but it's still something. Have been conservative butΒ feel 275 is a pragmatic target for Aquaman and aΒ very pleasing one. 300 would be exhilarating.
