91st Academy Awards - Discussion thread - RACISM IS OVER, THANKS GREEN BOOK

It looks like a Star is Born is no longer the frontrunner for BP. I think The Favourite is the frontrunner now.

As much as I love The Favourite, I really don't see it. Missing DGA was somewhat of a blow to it. I think it's gonna end up being Roma since Cuaron is pretty much assured to take home Director, plus the fact it managed two acting noms (one of which was a big surprise).

61 on MC and 64% on RT is rather meh for a film that was expected to be a major Oscar player ever since the day it was casted all the same, even if it ended up being one anyway.

that's my point though. those are averages. the people who enjoyed it, really enjoyed it. that's all you need for something to do well, enough people to really like it and put it highly, will outweigh lots of people putting it very low.

Fun fact: Nominee Marc Shaiman and I attended the same high school (25 years apart). My guidance counselor told me that back in the day when I expressed my desire to be a BIG SCREENWRITER.

I went to the same high school as Seamus McGarvey, and nowadays there are posters of all his movies in the entrance hall  - the biggest of which being Fifty Shades. Place is super Catholic and it always makes me cackle.

yeah that's what I was asking, whether you thought he is the best supporting performance or just whether you think his awards campaign should desrve it.

tepid reviews? What tepid reviews?

Polarising is not the same as tepid. That's the issue with rotten tomatoes, you look at 60% and you think average. When it's more like a love / hate thing. By the same logic, 2001: A Space Odyssey had a tepid reception, most people think its pretty mediocre/average..

I mean I'd still argue Carrell is the lead. Chalemet's presence is huge in the film, but his screen time seems limited compared to Michael Scott.

They are both leads. Yes David Sheff gets more screen time and arguably the film is from his perspective. But I'd say they are both leading roles. Nic is not a "supporting character". anyway.

Is it normal for a film to get a BP nom without any nominations in any other major category?

Surely there must have been something that made it BP worthy?

Going back to 2009 (i.e. since category expansion) it has happened a couple other times:

- Selma (nominated for Best Picture with no other major nominations - it had only a single other nomination, in fact, for Best Original Song).

- War Horse (nominated for Best Picture with no other major nominations)

Other films that came close:

- Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close received only one other nomination outside Picture, for Supporting Actor.

- The Post received a Best Actress nod for Meryl Streep and that is the only nomination it had outside Picture. Same for The Blind Side, with Sandra Bullock its only nomination outside Picture.

- Her, Inception and A Serious Man's only major nomination outside Picture was Original Screenplay (for A Serious Man it was literally its only other nomination). Similarly, District 9's only other major nomination was Adapted Screenplay.

- Best Picture nominees DunkirkMad Max: Fury Road, The Tree of Life, and Avatar received Best Director nominations but no other major nominations.

Peace,

Mike

This was definitely a big year for Netflix on the film side - it will be interesting to see how it fares in the years ahead, in terms of critical acclaim and awards recognition for film. Netflix is also obviously big on the TV side. Last year it topped HBO for the first time for the most nominations at the Emmy's.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-2019-netflix-now-competing-hollywood-studios-1177822

Quote

The streamer scored 15 Academy Award nominations Tuesday. It was buoyed by Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, which led with 10 nods, and also picked up three nominations for the Coen Brothers' The Battle of Buster Scruggs and another two for short documentaries. Roma puts Netflix in the coveted best-picture category for the first time. And the 15 noms Netflix amassed this year equal the 15 nods total it has collected in previous years.

Peace,

Mike

I've had a thought.

Never Look Away will probably have good box office when it comes to theaters this coming weekend. It was very smart of Sony Classics to position it for the weekend directly after the nomination announcement. People will see it because of the hype and spread word of mouth because of this.

I'm still not sure about Cold War because I'm sure Amazon will want to find a time to release the film onto its streaming service around the time of the Oscars, but for the time being, I'm sure that film will see a positive amount of interest thanks to the Oscars.

I'm personally very happy for the two films.

surprised none of the fanboys have mentioned this here but in terms of Studios, Disney actually led the nominations this year with 16 noms. 17 if you count that Pixar short. i'm not sure they've ever done that before?

That’s certainly not going to help silence the conspiracies about how Disney/ABC has the Academy in their pocket.

Seriously though, can we not give Best Animated Film to The Incredibles 2 or Ralph Breaks the Internet?
