Woman in the Dunes (1964) - 8/10. First 90 minutes better than the last 60, with the central relationship more interesting and the narrative still focused on tension rather than resignation, although the way the story ruthlessly snaps shut in the final moments still gives me chills days later. Might love it more on revisit when I know from the start where it's going. Allegory fundamentally pretty perfect, some stunning imagery and music.

*Only Angels Have Wings (1939) - 10/10. Fourth complete viewing, not counting all those times I made myself bawl by just watching the first 40 minutes (ending on the piano scene) and that time I spent weeks making Russian subtitles for it, which meant going through every dialogue scene multiple times. "Things are happening awful fast around here," is the key line, and you could say certain things happen too fast, but on the upside there's not a flagging second in the whole two hours and this is such a fully realized, immersive and immediate world it's still exhilarating to be in even when you know every moment by heart. Possibly the best screenplay ever written.

*McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) - 8/10. One of those films I feel like I should love more than I do, and this time I warmed up more to its loose-limbed approach (some miraculous moments in the interplay among the supporting cast), on the other hand its genre subversion and anti-capitalist messaging are still overdetermined for my taste (though not "wrong", ofc) and, as in Don't Look Now, it's kind of a shame Julie Christie becomes increasingly sidelined in the second half after making such a great impression in the first. The cinematography may be the most beautiful I've ever seen.

*Avalon (1990) - 9/10. A slight downgrade from the perfect 10, one of those cases where you're so awestruck by what a film is doing on first viewing that you quickly stop noticing the seams, which stand out more on revisit. Some overly cute scenes and dialogue that forcefully underlines things instead of just letting them breathe, but still a mostly phenomenal film about Time consuming lives with all their dreams, histories, joys and miseries. One of the most neglected American movies of the past 30 years.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) - 6/10. Inexcusably long, structureless grab-bag of mostly pointlessly manufactured conflicts and overmilked jokes that range from pretty funny to DOA, juuuuuuuust barely saved by its sincerity (there are times when it connects, which is more than can be said for e.g. the craven synthetic bullshit of Yesterday), the occasional well-done comic and/or musical moment (esp. the climactic number) and Stevens and McAdams' performances.

  • Dead Like Me - just the first episode so far; Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini have good chemistry together and neither of their characters are annoying or unlikeable (for me, that is); it's funny yet dark; looking forward to seeing how it goes from here
  • They Live - good acting and action (it's a John Carpenter film, so the latter's almost guaranteed), a cool score, well-paced and a strong message that's probably as relevant now as it was then (plus one of the most kickass lines of 1980s cinema)
  • Wild - I haven't seen many Reese Witherspoon films (American Psycho, Legally Blonde, Monsters vs. Aliens, Inherent Vice), but this is her best performance for sure; coupled with a compelling story, great cinematography and (yet another) good Laura Dern performance, it makes for a great experience and a damn good film

Movies:

Decide to watch Apocalypse Now for the first time since I had watched The Godfather Trilogy just and already love it even more than the Godfather films. Unflinching in its depiction of war and the craziness and horror of it had me thinking for a long time afterwards. Will try to watch the Hearts of Darkness documentary at a later date. 10/10

TV Shows:

Umbrella Academy Season 1: Mostly pretty good with half the ensemble I really like with the other half feeling a bit indifferent about. For those that have watched the first season they can probably guess which characters are in which half. 7.5/10

Arrested Development Season 5: Final episode was actually a good summary of what the show is but the season as a whole was a step back from S4 which already was a big step back from S1-S3. Hope they leave the show for good now 5.5/10

Enjoying the final days of movie theaters, this Sunday I went to see...

becky_xlg.jpg

A vicious nasty and very intense thriller about a girl stuck in a battle against a group of nazis that want to kill her because of a key she has. It is violent, bloody and all kinds of fun. A wild ride.

The other movie I saw was...

6e0d48958fe08a0f076d5123eac2f3b3.jpg

Ophelia is an attempt to develop the character which people mostly know because of Hamlet. It shows her side of the story with a solid script helped by a very strong cast led by Clive Owen's incredible wig.

Bruce McGill’s outburst in The Insider is so awesome and unexpected — it’s glorious.

Been depressed about the lack of box office so didn't go to this forum for a long time which is a shame cause this thread is excellent. Loved reading through it. Here is my list for the month to catch up.

1. Better Call Saul - Excellent and just as good as Breaking Bad - 9.5 out of 10
2. Succession - First season was good but about below what everyone was saying for me 7.5 out of 10 but season 2 is one of the best seasons of TV I've seen - 10 out of 10
3. The Old Guard - Decent way to pass the time - 6.5
4. Dark - Couldn't connect much with the characters in season 1 but the plot is excellent throughout all 3 seasons - 9 out of 10
5. Crash Landing On You - The Coronavirus has made me watch shows I never would have paid attention to before like this Korean series on Netflix that turned out to be excellent and lovely - 9 out of 10
6. Palm Springs - Delightful - 8.5 out of 10
7. Schindler's List - As good as I remember - 10 out of 10
8. Eurovision - Meh, the songs were fun - 5 out of 10
9. A Whisker Away - Netflix anime film was fun - 7 out of 10
10. Space Force - I probably laughed more than others - 7 out of 10

Portrait of a Lady on Fire. It was so gorgeous and so understated, there are some moments in this movie that were just overwhelming for me. And the ending is 🔥🔥🔥 .

Raiders of the Lost Ark. I think I haven't seen it in over a decade, but there's still not much to say. Almost every frame of it is iconic. And it's so amusing to me, that they are still trying to rename it for the sake of brand synergy. There's real worry people won't recognise one of the most famous movies ever made if it doesn't say Indiana Jones in front of it.

IJ and the Temple of Doom. I hear the complaints about the bumbling love interest but this remains one of my favorite Spielberg movies. It's so wild, so crazy and moves at such a breakneck pace I love every minute of it. It's also a very different movie than Raiders, just takes the same character and throws him into a different situation with different stakes and even different iconography. And Harrison Ford was at peak hotness in this movie.

IJ and the Last Crusade. My minor issue with this is that it's the exact opposite of Doom. It's a bit too much like the first one. Same conflict with a race against the Nazis for a religious artifact, same structure, same sidekicks with expandeds roles, even half a dozen references to how much indy hates snakes. I think the opening segment is the best in the franchise and all the Connery stuff are perfect but a lot of the movie feels like its using Raiders as visual and storytelling crutch. None of it is bad, it's a very good movie. It just doesn't have the same spark as the first two.

IJ and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull. Like most belated sequels it is a mixed bag of cool stuff and lame stuff. My initial reaction in 08 was whatever but watching it now I thinks it's more cool than lame.

Decided to rewatch Best Animated Feature winners cause I love animation:

Big Hero 6 - C - The animation is lovely, the message about grief and how it effects others is nice and while I like the first twenty minutes, the characters apart from Hiro and Baymax sucks, the action is bland and the writing is uninspired. In short it’s amazing that Disney released The Incredibles ten years before Big Hero 6, and the blandness it has.

Spirited Away - A+ - A truly moving motion picture, and is another Mizayaki classic, with stunning animation, loveable characters and a moving script. Thought it was weird when I was a kid but appreciate much more now.

Shrek - A- - While the animation has aged poorly, and I do feel some jokes are misses, Shrek is still a delightfully satirical and heartfelt piece.

So, watching Lindsay Ellis talk about Shah Rukh Khan has prompted me to watch some of his movies over the next few weeks ( @charlie Jatinder and @grim22, since both of you know a lot about Indian cinema, it would be great if I could get some recommendations from you guys). Watched Kaal Ho Naa Ho today and it's a pretty great rom-com and melodrama. It's absolutely cheesy (the version of NYC they create is just so wacky too) but it's also sincere and a fun film to watch. Shah Rukh Khan is also portrayed as such a joyful person in this (Lindsay Ellis was right when she said that the guy just embodies happiness). There's some toxic views on love (such as conflating love with strength and the love interest being referred to as "mine" as if the main character owns her) but I found it pretty easy to ignore that for the most part just because of how wonderful the rest of the film is.

I am not really KHNH fan. My favourite are;

1. DDLJ: Its Titanic basically.

1. Swades(This IMO is way better than Lagaan): SRK's acting, ARR's music which some of it he reused in Slumdog. And a great story.

1. Chak De India: Acting and Story.

Now list from here change time to time, this time I will put in a way you like the films best.

4. Baazigar

5. My Name is Khan

6. Veer Zaara

7. Rab Ne Banadi Jodi: The film is based on one small gimmick. Don't think about it much. Its simple, sweet and harsh.

8. Dil Se: Mani Ratnam & ARR.

9. KaNK: Long and not really good as per public,  but I liked it. Guess you may.

10. Darr

Don't you give up watching 1st 3 atleast. DDLJ and CDI are on Prime while Swades is on Netflix.

I saw this one years ago with my family. Might try a re-watch but I don't remember being too fond of this (not really into sports films).

Sports is just background. Its personal story of Kabir Khan that is the main theme.

Trailer still holds for a 13 years old film. Much better than Dangal for me.

Relic 2/5

Its a really unique idea, but the whole execution is so generic.

Unsolved Mysteries 3/5

some interesting episodes, particularly the French one. Some ridiculous lies (the UFO one lol).

Chewing Gum 3/5

Michaela Coel is hilarious.

Looking (two seasons & film) 4/5

Realistic writing, genuine friendships, great dialogue. Amazing soundtrack. Fantastic lead performance.
