The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Recommended Posts

Sales for Scream slowing down makes sense since it's bound to be quite frontloaded and, being a horror movie, sales during the day are bound to be relatively slow compared to later shows. Still thinking it hits $40M though.

John Wick 4 Previews

MTC2 - 13690/284109 201876.55 1716 shows

its steady state pace until next catalyst.

Donnie Yen is invited to present an award at the Oscar, he is the co-lead of John Wick 4. Some suspect he might be presenting Best Female Actress to Michelle Yeoh (his close friend and someone who worked closely together for many years) - am sure he will talk about John Wick 4 on stage. Might be a catalyst here.

I don´t think he will anymore, he had a profile for QG recently where he basically defends Chinese government, there´s a quite strong petition now asking for him to be removed from the presenters at Oscar and quite a strong backlash against him as well.

Personally i couldn´t care less but there is this situation, he can be uninvited in the next days if Academy decides to avoid bad publicity.

Super Mario Bros. showtimes starting to populate.  All Day Wed and as far as I can tell no Tuesday previews (so far).

...

Have fun storming the castle, folks. 👍

(on a related note, D&D showtimes also populating — 3pm previews)

So when Mario tracking starts, should it be compared to other video game movies like sonic or other illumination movies?

Sonic 2 and Minions Rise of Gru are best comps

Mario is getting a starting single hero MCU supers set, not an animated one, at my Cinemark locals...right now, I can see all the PLF used for Mario at my 1st local - 18 showings - 12 PLF/6 Reg (2 XD 3d, 3 3d, and 7 XD) (4 screens) and 15 showings (3 3d, 12 reg) at my 2nd local (3 screens).

This is HUGE for an animated set.  And they are giving it this many planned showings even with the strong March, so March movies are gonna be fighting for the space into that Easter weekend...

LOL. You think the Academy cares about some keyboard warriors and agrees to cancelculture? If the Academy does that - what signal are they giving?

Petition is by some Hong Kongers, which is not even a key market for Hollywood... while Donnie Yen represents US-China relations noting he is now a political party member in the arts division. You know how much more viewership and how clips can be trending on weibo if he attends? Especially noting Oscar was banned last year in China due to Chloe Zhao.

Of course they could care, there´s a very aggresive cold war between China and US right now, US discourse is obviously very against China regime, it´s not just cancel culture, we all see what happened with Mulan for this exact same statement coming from it´s lead actress.

If the petition is from Hong Kongers only and not from americans then great for him, it certainly won´t impact anything if his quote doesn´t blow out of proportion on US. If it does, of course it can have some negative impact, the very last thing the academy wants after last year is another backlash.

Anyway, this is not the thread for this discussion and you said the petition isn´t coming from americans so with this in mind, yeah he´s probably fine then.

Scream on early wednesday, 65 i think it´s right after the first shows starts so it´s probably about to get awful reviews

Apparently word on the street is 65 isn't being screened for critics at all. We know what that means.
