“Disney’s misses are sometimes better than other studio’s best hits,” says Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Did they spend too much? Probably. But ‘Lightyear’ has all summer to play out.”

Can’t call a $50M opening a flop, but it’s absolutely an underperformance based on history and expectations, and it’s ok to say that. The flat Fri to Sat suggests a big week 2 drop is incoming, Minions arrives a week later, then Thor - there’s really not much optimism for a leggy summer run

Thor might actually soften the drop due to the Disney overlap. Minions will provide competition the week before that, but the fact it seems to be arriving with arguably the least amount of fanfare out of any movie in that franchise to date + the weekend being a 4 day holiday weekend could also be to Lightyear's benefit.

$50 mil isn’t a flop for Lightyear but definitely a big underperformance. The hype wasn’t all that hot but $70m should have been doable.

Huh? It's 100% a flop. The real question at this point is whether it's a bomb or not.

That's a nearly TGM level drop right there. I wonder if it can keep it up with the D+ release imminent

Shoot I didn't know there was a difference. Either way, if this is considered a success for Lightyear by some people, Kotm must've actually made a profit theatrically with a 177M opening at 170M budget compared to Lightyear's 85M opening on a 200M budget
