Labor Day/National Cinema Day Weekend Thread | TGM crosses 700M! Fifth-biggest movie DOM! The Cruise Missile never stops

Recommended Posts

So it seems the drops yesterday weren't that bad after all given the craziness of Saturday? Keep in mind that Sunday always behaves as a second Saturday on 4-day holiday weekends.

Also, Bullet Train looks pretty much locked to hit $100M now.

So I did some tabulating of what the movies would have grossed over the weekend at the Saturday prices been normal price (I multiplied sat gross by 4, which is close their their normal prices give for take a dollar I believe).

I know had they been regular price they these movies wouldn't have grossed as much. but this is just to see how successful Cinema day really was and how crazy attendance really was Saturday. I went to the movies myself that day expecting it to be fairly quite and the theater was PACKED and I had to wait in line for 15 minutes.

Top Gun Maverick $13,300,000 / $14,800,000
Super Pets $13,300,000 / $14,800,000
Spider-Man No way home $12,700,000 / $14,300,000
Bullet Train $12,600,000 / $14,000,000
The Invitation $11,100,000 / $12,100,000
Beast $9,100,000 / $9,800,000
Minions 2 $8,600,000 / $9,400,000
Thor Love and Thunder $6,300,000 / 6,900,000
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero $5,700,000 / $6,100,000
Jaws $5,000,000 / $5,400,000

Top 10 3/4 day totals

$97,700,000 / $107,600,000

Where the Crawdads Sing $4,100,000 / $4,600,000
Nope $3,800,000 / $4,100,000
Three Thousand years of Longing $3,600,000 / $3,900,000
Honk For Jesus save your soul $3,200,000 / $3,500,000
Elvis $2,400,000 / $2,600,000
Gigi and Nate $2,400,000 / $2,600,000
Orphan: First Kill $1,600,000 / $1,800,000
Breaking $1,500,000 / $1,600,000
Jurassic World 3 $1,100,000 / $1,200,000
Bodies Bodies Bodies $1,050,000 / $1,150,000
Fall $600,000 / $650,000
The Black Phone $500,000 / $550,000
Easter Sunday $400,000 / $450,000
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris $300,000 / $325,000

overall totals of most films
$121,800,000 / $136,600,000

This makes Labor day weekend the most attended weekend since Nope released on July 22nd. all that from one crazy day too.

Interesting thing here is "Spider-Man" was actually not the most attended film of the weekend because a lot of it's gross came from Friday and it's Saturday was actually quite a bit lower than Top Gun and Super Pets.

So what are people's National Cinema Day plans? Mine is seeing Minions 2 with a friend. She really wanted to see it, I had no plans to see it on my own, but that's how the cookie crumbles I guess.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I drove almost an hour after getting off work to see "Three Thousand years of Longing" it was not playing locally and I really wanted to see it and take advantage of the $3 ticket day.

Will National Cinema day return any time soon? I believe the concession will make the discounted price a worthy investment for cinema chain.

I think they were wanting to make it an annual thing. and the results would put to yes. while studios may have not gotten a ton out of it. it's great for movie theaters who make most of their profit from concessions anyways.

Not to mention a lot more people saw films than would have otherwise.

will it be the same weekend next year if it does become annual? my thing would be if this is every labor day weekend Saturday, is that most major studios would shy away from releasing anything to big on this date. but it kind of makes since, because aside from "Shang Chi" labor weekend has been kind of a dead zone for box office anyways,

Next year. Studios won’t agree to this on most weekends but this one was trash so it worked.

And now we sleep until The Woman King because this coming weekend might have no movies above 4M (and certainly nothing over 5M).

I think there’s a non zero chance Clerks 3 hits #1 next Tuesday, considering Fathom pricing.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot did $691k on its first day of Fathom, which would be likely more than enough for first place that day.

I have doubts if The Woman King hits that as well. Will need really strong reviews out of the festivals.

It's still somewhat crazy to me that Hollywood pretty much decided that releasing big movies after mid-July till mid-October was not something they wanted to do. And the movies they did release either had no marketing like Fall, or appealed to almost no one like Bodies Bodies Bodies and Three Thousand Years of longing.

If any weeks in August show up on Box Office Game in like 3 months, it will be really hard to recall what even released.

We are definitly on track for a bunch of 5M and lower bomb openers just like last Fall if marketing and reviews don't combine for a strong enough combo to draw audiences. The Woman King, Bros, White Bird, Barbarian, Pearl, DWD, Prey for the Devil, Amsterdam, Ticket to Paradise. It is gonna be a rough Fall for theaters. The one I see breaking out from the September lineup if it has good reviews is Smile.

Ticket to Paradise could be big, though.

Julia doing a romcom again, Clooney back in his wheelhouse, solid trailer, excellent counter programming for Black Adam.

It's true the next couple months are full of wildcards, but I think in that period, all of Woman King, Smile, and Ticket to Paradise should do well enough as solid breakouts. Quorum's data is also backing me up a bit here with them. Woman King is more reliant on reviews, but they're pushing this more as a fun actioner than an awards title and it'll probably be a solid crowdpleaser even if the RT's in the 60s or 70s. Smile's also got a fun and goofy premise, and Ticket to Paradise has solid starpower behind it. And perhaps Bros can really turn the tide after TIFF WOM drops, though that still has the issue of no starpower.

And yeah there will be plenty of no1currs in September and October, but I have faith those movies can help buoy things, alongside Halloween and Black Adam.
