So what's Elemental reaching WW?

I think if it has another 10% worldwide hold this weekend (excluding UK since this is its opening), 400m is locked.

I feel like Bridesmaids was the last mainstream comedy that was truly laugh out loud funny.

Think you may be right personally. Airplane scene is one of the last times I truly remember fits of laughter in a movie rather than chuckles. For me I mean.

Gen Z is pretty humorless on top of being sexless. I don't know how often I have to see them looking for old movies to be offended by on social media, in between all the sex in media is pointless and gross posts.. It's like the most puritan gen since before hippies. And it's had a great affect on comedy across the board.

There's really no new comedy stars. SNL used to pump out a bonafide star every 5 or so years and tons of smaller people too. They haven't for a long time now.

There's really no new huge stand up comics either. It's still mostly filled with the old guard.

No comedy break out films. Hell even comedy series have shriveled up in existence and quality.

This only really applies to the extremely online ones (which I guess makes up a bigger percentage than the generation before them).

But it’s like saying all millennials were “rawr xd” types when those were just the ones that used the internet the most

I do think Miraculous movie opening in France and Germany and some parts of Europe will eat into it hold wise.

Which is extremely odd b/c they love porn, or at least idea of porn, and defending porn and hook up culture. And the topics / search terms are disgusting. This not my forte so I really don't know what's going on but looks extremely bizzarre from a far. I know the argument will be it's not the same people, but there is over lap, and extremely incongruous ideas from 1 generation is something of note.

Did you not see Girls Trip? Good Boys came out after Girls Trip so that would be my choice. No Hard Feelings needed a couple more jokes/situations and it might have been the most recent one for me.

I remember having an EXCELLENT time at Blockers with my crowd. They were super into it, which made the movie all the better.  It was a fun mix of like teenage girls and guys that were just there for Cena. I still remember them like chanting his name during the scene where he’s chugging beer.

Political correctness has very little to do with it if anything at all. The reason comedies have fallen off is due to an overemphasis on quippy, "oh that happened!!" jokes from the Hangover and MCU. These aren't jokes so much as regular sentences told with the volume and vulgarity of a "joke." If you want to make a political argument, you could theoretically say that a movie like Joy Ride uses this same tired formula and wraps it in identity politics - I haven't seen the movie, but that's alot more valid critique than political correctness. It's not that people are afraid to make offensive jokes. It's that much of the humor in studio comedies is not jokes at all, just loudly phrased observations.

Cleverness does not need to be "offensive" to work. See - Game Night. Heck, see the first two Austin Powers movies.

Lol I got stood up by the girl I was supposed to see Blockers with, which kind of soured the experience but it was still a fun movie

So sad I missed this one in theaters, I really liked it honestly. Great mix of hilarious and actually really sweet and weirdly charming. Cena is a riot. The three girls are excellent.

Out of curiosity: What is your favourite comedy?

Mine is probably either Hot Fuzz or a german comedy (which probably nobody here has ever heard of) called Der Wixxer, which is a satire of Edgar Wallace crime storys.

The Hangover is the GOAT, Honourable mentions to Tropic thunder and the Wog boy movies

Why are people shifting the failure of comedies onto Gen Z? Gen Z are all fairly young to have killed a genre. Comedic movie stars like Adam Sandler and Melissa McCarthy just put out so many bad movies that it kind of just destroyed audiences faith in comedies theatrically, and this began before Gen Z had any real purchase power.
