Might also indicate that it 's playing stronger with families than parts 1 and 2 though why that should be so I've no idea.

 

Using my family as an example, we all liked the 3rd one better than the first two. We have recommended the movie to our friends. May be the same may be true with others also.  

 

Obviously, this is based on anecdotal evidence. In my review of the 3rd one in RTM, I did allude to that this may attract more people than the 2nd one. :)

Sunday in Germany must have been a lot better than expected, Hobbit 3 dropped less than 25% (estimates had it at -30%). In its first weekend, Sunday was stronger than expected, too. Seems like a Sunday favourite.

By its first Sunday at the North American box office, Pirates of the Carribean 4 had earned $90.2M in NA and $260.4M in other countries. I know it's not an apples-to-apples comparison but I wanted to mention it anyway because of the similarity.
