There were different numbers: Frozen on 24th grossed 4,8M$, BH6 and Penguins 0,8M$ and 0,6M$, starting from such low numbers the increase should be greater and in any case on 25th they have the lowest theater average in the chart.

They also had substantial theater count losses. They are lucky to have increased at all, particularly penguins.

Just for S&Gs here's the performance of just about every animated film on Christmas day over the past several years.

I've also included, for comparison purpose, the best and worst jumps in the top 10 for non animated films in those years.

Generally, straight animated films do tend to perform worse than anything else (even live action/animation hybrid family fare). It doesn't matter how well the animated films have been performing up to that point, or how long they've been in theaters. The increases on the 25th are more muted.

If they have a Christmas theme, they tend to fare even worse.

I am soo moving out of my town when I get through with College. a new movie theater opened up with six screens in November (which the last one had 2). and I was like yay! maybe they'll actually play movies I want to see. I swear they just look at the worst review films and put them.

Top Five has an 80%+ on RT. And it's considered Chris Rock's masterpiece. Hobbit 3 and Mockingjay are also Fresh on RT.

But yeah that's a pretty bad slate.

Epic Crone meltdown over Unbroken's success.. love her selective take on feminism

http://www.awardsdaily.com/blog/2014/12/unbroken-takes-box-office-on-christmas-despite-reviews/

So I noticed the part when Stone said Universal didn't want people like her to tell others about the movie.

I have to break the news to her and a majority of movie bloggers and critics they're still not as big or as influential as they think.

Audiences are going to see what interests them.

Disney will bring Rob Marshall back for Pirates 5

The Kon-Tiki directors are doing Pirates 5, I think Marshall will likely direct Follies next although it's trickier musical to adapt compared into Into the Woods and a tougher sell.

Ehh... BOFA has defied the previous twos' holds its entire run so far. $16-18 million for Friday seems likely. $48-52 million 3-day would put $330 million+ DOM in play IMO.

$52 million ($179 million)

$30.5 million ($261 million)

$17 million ($287 million)

$10.5 million/$13 million ($305 million)

$6.5 million ($314 million)

$4 million ($320 million)

$2 million/$2.5 million ($323 million)

$1 million ($324 million)

Of course, it all depends on Jan 2-4.

Unbroken

$15.6 million

$19.7 million ($35.3 million)

$19.4 million ($54.7 million)

$16.1 million ($70.8 million)

$55.2 million 3-day

$70.8 million 4-day

Could surpass Gravity if it holds up. I'm not sure if a $50 million+ 3 day is ridiculous or not. With how many sellouts it and ITW received today, I can only imagine buzz over the weekend will make it that much worse. Hobbit 3 and NATM3 also seemed poised to benefit from these sellouts.

Either way, this weekend is looking insane. (Just going by 2003. 2008 might provide considerably smaller numbers)

  • Unbroken: $55 million/$71 million
  • The Hobbit 3: $49 million/$62 million
  • Into the Woods: $47 million/$62 million
  • Night at the Museum 3: $24 million/$31 million
  • Annie: $15 million/$19.5 million
  • The Gambler: $11 million/$16 million
  • The Imitation Game: $10.5 million/$13.5 million
  • Exodus - Gods and Kings: $9 million/$12 million
  • Mockingjay Part 1: $8.5 million/$11 million
  • Top Five: $6 million/$7.5 million
  • Wild: $5.5 million/$7 million
  • Big Eyes: $5.5 million/$7 million
  • Big Hero 6: $5 million/$6 million
  • The Interview: $4.5 million/$5.5 million
  • Interstellar: $4 million/$5 million

My predictions are indeed bullish

I've always wished that every single one of your predictions to come true. That would be amazing for the box office!

lol, Lionsgate actually bothered to report actuals today, and they did it earlier than their usual 4pm as-late-as-possible shenanigans!

What are those people up to over there?
