I have no idea why American war heroes seem to be the flavour of the month for January.

 

I guess me being British somewhat detaches me from the appeal. Plus, I am not a big fan of Eastwood's directing.

This was super bland for me... Like, stale bread bland. Disappointing effort from Eastwood here too. All that said, should sell like hotcakes to the stateside viewing public. Hell, it already is...

Am I the only one not surprised by this?

Almost everyone I know on Facebook has been planning to go see American Sniper with large groups of friends. Plus, it was pretty obvious the flyover/religious crowd would go see this in droves (they love pro-American war films and Clint Eastwood when he does action/Western). WB pulled off something similar with Blind Side - only this will probably double its opening. The Oscar buzz will help it even more-so.

$5.3 million previews is $50 million+ 3-day IMO. A 5 day of $50 million would be far too front-loaded for an Oscar bait film. $65-70 million 3 day is more likely considering how back-loaded Eastwood films tend to be.

Taken 3 got $3.5 million previews and that's a franchise film. $5.3 million locks $45 million at the lowest for the 3-day.

Here's hoping Sniper causes overflow towards Wedding Ringer, Taken 3, Selma and Blackhat.
