Focus is nudging up slightly from 20-22 to 21-23: http://variety.com/2015/film/news/box-office-will-smiths-focus-heading-for-23-million-opening-weekend-fifty-shades-slipping-1201443444/

Will Smith’s “Focus” is ending the box office dominance of of “Fifty Shades of Grey” with a moderate opening in the $21 to $23 million range at 3,323 locations this weekend.

While hardly dazzling, “Focus” won’t be a disaster for Warner Bros., unlike Smith’s 2013 sci-fi pic “After Earth” was for Sony. “Focus” — a combination of romantic comedy and heist caper — carries a $50 million price tag, or about a third of “After Earth.”

After stunning audiences with a record-setting opening weekend and easily winning its second session, “Fifty Shades” is fading fast and heading for about $10 million this weekend at the U.S. box office.

Relativity’s launch of “The Lazarus Effect” has been tracking to open between $12 million and $14 million when it bows in 2,666 locations, which should be good enough for second place. The micro-budget horror film, produced by Blumhouse for $3.3 million, stars Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde as researchers who figure out a way to bring the dead back to life.

The third weekend of Fox’s “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and the fourth weekend of “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” are pegged as edging out “Fifty Shades” for the third and fourth slots with somewhere around $11 million each.

Warner Bros.’ “American Sniper” could clear the $330 million mark this weekend. The Bradley Cooper drama has taken in $323.4 million as of Thursday, when it took in over $800,000.

Don't you mean Cinderella? ;)

To me, it is a given that Cinderella will have a great weekend, especially with the news that a Frozen short will be in front of it.  It will also have an RT score of over 70%.  Knowing that it will do so well isn't that interesting.

Lol Lazarus is not doing $12-14M based on a $3.8M Friday. Oculus -- which got much better reviews -- could only muster a $12M weekend after a $5M Friday. Even if that included late nights, Lazarus will be lucky to hit $12M.

Deadline has it projected at $9-10m which seems far more reasonable.

Bottom line: Smith is still a draw but nowhere near the draw he once was. I think it's clear the debacle that was After Earth hurt Smith badly. People just got tired of him  trying to push his kids down their throats.

People were talking about how Warners/DC needed Smith as Deadshot. Now it looks as if Smith needs Deadshot as much as DC needs Smith.

Will Smith has always been known for shrewdly picking his roles (AE being the one exception, though even that was more of a plan to buttress Jaden as a lead). It didn't surprise me that he accepted Suicide Squad. This is exactly what he needs to do to get his drawing power back to its full extent. Pick daring roles in off-beat blockbusters.
