Mission: Impossible - Fallout | July 27 2018 | Paramount | Reactions coming in | "Best action movie since Fury Road"

Recommended Posts

Just a guess:  6 + 19 + 21(+10%) + 15(-28%) = 61

I'd say the hype is about the same as for Rogue Nation which adjusts to $61.6m OW.

The two previous movies also had spectacular action set pieces. I think this one will increase over RN but I can't really go all in on it going WAAAAY above though.

This one goes above and beyond though.

Probably above Fury Road B+ cinemascore, in general but special in the US action does not work that much, you need emotion's above all and humors (and that what blockbuster do), the latest Mission Impossible bring a lot of that versus something that is more pure actionner like The Raid, Fury Road, Hardcore Henry.

But like mentioned, Fury Road for a franchise entry had nice legs.

The Raid had several scenes with pretty strong emotions, there I don't complain. With Fury Road that's another matter. It indeed had great action but at least to me, other elements of the film (the storyline e.g. or the lack of emotions in too many scenes) were a bit too mediocre to rate the film more than 8/10. It was still a very entertaining film, especially on the big screen, but I'm pretty sure that M: I - Fallout delivers more in this field.

Yesterday, Edge of Tomorrow was on TV here. I saw it in theaters back then but I'm not sure if I/we bought the DVD and have to search for it. So I watched it yesterday and have to say, the film is even better than I remembered it. Glad that a sequel seems to happen.

GP had Cruise scaling the tallest building in the world. RN had him hanging off the side of a plane taking off. Every one of these has a super buzzy setpiece.

Ghost Protocol adjusts to $243.5M DOM and Rogue Nation adjusts to $216.4M DOM. The realistic hope is that Fallout earns a DOM total somewhere between those two.

To address the other ongoing discussion, the action setpieces and beats in M:I flicks plays far better to a DOM audience than the action in Fury Road or Raid. Those movies carry hard R ratings and are decided far more bizarre than M:I. The action in M:I is much, much more in the vein of the Fast and Furious franchise but slightly more high brow. I'd say Bond as well. Though, the last Bond to boast outstanding action beats was Casino Royale.

Again, I just don't see the comparisons to Fury Road or Raid. Both are much harder sells to a domestic audience, especially Raid given it's foreign as well and demanded viewer read subs which is always a monumental hurdle at the DOM box office. Still boggles my mind to see Crouching Tiger adjusts to just under $210M DOM. That's incredible.

What's the most admissions ever DOM for a foreign film that's entirely subtitled?

Best action movie since fury road won't inspire much confidence considering most people found fury road to be massively overrated

I wouldn't say most people found Fury Road massively overrated when it has a 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 8.1 average on IMDb, and a 3.4x multiplier.

This. Not to mention, it's a much harder sell than a movie like Fallout.

I don't recall the discussion as much as a should but I imagine folks were going bonkers about Rogue Nation's 3.51x multiplier in the summer of '15. That's an outstanding multiplier for a $55M+ OW DOM blockbuster. It makes it all the more obvious that M:I plays well to a slightly older audience that's more than okay to wait on WOM and then catch in theaters a week or two after release.

Fury Road and The Dark Knight share the same issue, which is when these 2 annoying groups of people agree that a film is the second coming of JC, with their annoying and embarrassing "best blockbuster of the decade" label :

Critics AND Dudebros

You really don't want that happening to your film, the worst combination possible unless, unless

Critics are dudebros in disguise ?

I pity Nolan and Miller, I really do, poor things.

Tragic.

:(
