MARY POPPINS RETURNS | Disney | 12.19.18 | Rob Marshall directing | Emily Blunt, Lin Manuel Miranda

Recommended Posts

Walt Disney is developing a new Mary Poppins music film.

Into the Woods director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt will handle the project for the Studio.

The film will take place 20 years after the original Mary Poppins, in Depression-era London. Where the Julie Andrews original was largely based on the first book in the Mary Poppins series, the new film will draw from the remaining seven installments of P.L. Travers’ children’s books. While the film will not be a proper sequel, it will continue Mary’s adventures with the Banks family.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) will pen new songs for the film. David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi) will write the screenplay.

Disney has wanted a sequel as early as the 80s but given the original is so beloved, a new film has an uphill struggle. Since Julie Andrews no longer can sing, I do wonder who they'll get to play Mary and if you'd be able to have Bert or even the Banks children as adults
