Only R-Rated films can be masterpieces.

Proove me wrong.

2001 a space odyssey was rated General, the Lords of the Rings were PG-13

Lawrence of Arabia is PG

Gone with the wind of all masterpiece is G.

Hays code studio system turned many masterpiece, from Casablanca to many other, no one is suggesting any of this. The limitation even often brought artist to find fun way to tell the story, take how creative the exposition that Captain Louis Renault is sleeping with the poor disparate refuge is done.

A rock star was living a very non-pg live, thus the comments..

The ratings code was design in the late 60s when the Hayes code was finally done away with - then we got G,  M (mature- later to be PG), R and X (not a porn rating just no under 17 period).  But to show how different it was from today's ratings - Jaws with nudity, drugs, carnage and blood was rated PG  in 1975

Yes the Hayes code required ingenuity to get around but there were films and themes they could not do any more like Lubitsch's menage a trois Design for Living and it mandated not only only against sexuality but circumscribed all kinds of morality -  hence mob or crime movies had to end in death or imprisonment.   Similar to the way novels with gay characters if they didn't die or go straight used to be blacklisted by publishing houses or reviewers.
