Elessar
I know you’re used to people raving about a movie on social media after it premieres. But trust me when I say Denis Villeneuve's #Dune is a masterpiece not just of science-fiction but of cinema. Haven’t felt transported like that in a movie theater in a long time. 1/3 pic.twitter.com/VvJ5xg8zlb — Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) September 3, 2021 Everything about #Dune works. From Hans Zimmer’s AMAZING score to Greig Fraser’s stunning cinematography to Bob Morgan and Jacqueline West’s gorgeous costumes…the movie feels like they went to the other side of the galaxy and filmed what was really happening. 2/3 pic.twitter.com/6xjPTKdwdv — Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) September 3, 2021 The movie is 2 hr 30 min and FLIES by. My biggest complaint about #Dune is that it wasn’t 6 hours. In a perfect world ‘Dune’ will be a huge hit and Villeneuve will make his sequels. I need to see the rest of this story unfold on movie screens. 3/3 pic.twitter.com/luqdBTyiAk — Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) September 3, 2021 DUNE feels like the pop culture event we were waiting for. The next Star Wars, the next Lord of the Rings or the next Game of Thrones. It's here. It's epic, but it is also just giddy FUN! Don't let anyone tell you this is "Star Wars for adults," as anyone can enjoy this story. — Rafael Motamayor @ Venice (@RafaelMotamayor) September 3, 2021 #Dune did something I frankly did not expect: it made those 155 mins fly by, embedding you firmly in a world of its own devising, dazzling & inventive, a far-flung future dotted with vestiges from bygone worlds. Keep those spices flowing. #Venezia78 — Leonardo Goi @Venezia78 (@LeonardoGoi) September 3, 2021 I have experienced #Dune. It's a once-in-a-generation film, akin to when Lord of the Rings hit the big screen 20 years ago. When it ended I was ready for more — Aaron Couch (@AaronCouch) September 3, 2021 I've had a chance to see #DuneMovie! Denis Villeneuve has brought a new sci-fi universe to the big screen as we’ve never seen before.#Dune is an incredibly captivating and visually breathtaking adventure made better by Hans Zimmers elevating score. The film is truly epic! pic.twitter.com/iRuTPO50Lo — Dorian Parks (@DorianParksnRec) September 3, 2021 gonna rewatch #Dune on IMAX to fully immerse myself in the sheer size of it Denis Villeneuve created a world so visually stunning you can’t take your eyes away from the screen - it captivates you for 2.5 hours & by the end you just want more magnificent score by @HansZimmer too pic.twitter.com/yZi2el7bh8 — Laura Kramer (@Laura_Kramer) September 3, 2021 #Dune is a cinematic thunderclap. Maybe my favorite film of the year. Denis Villeneuve & co. created a phenomenal adaptation of Herbert's work. It feels alien in the way the best sci-fi does and balances visceral violence and cruelty with resilience and hope. An absolute banger. pic.twitter.com/TIJ6qHaHWD — Dan Casey (@DanCasey) September 3, 2021 I left DUNE shaking. This is how people seeing 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY back in 1968 for the first time must have felt. The grandeur of this thing is off the charts. However blown away you think you’re going to be, multiply it by ten. #Venezia78 — Joshua Rothkopf (@joshrothkopf) September 3, 2021 #Dune is incredible. Sci-fi that feels as epic as anything we've seen, visually ambitious (and weird as f--k), and yet completely lived-in, visceral, and gritty. Set pieces that gave me I'm-a-kid-again chills. Top-tier performances and rich characters. Bring on Part 2. pic.twitter.com/0JU1TlKO4E — Joel Meares (@joelmeares) September 3, 2021 I’ve watched #Dune & it’s among the most immersive moviegoing experiences I’ve ever had w/ a sci-fi film. There is masterful filmmaking on display here. When paired w/ its big, monstrous sound, the film wondrously transports you to a new, exciting, horrific yet beautiful world pic.twitter.com/Z0oNUJbiNE — Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) September 3, 2021
Elessar
Okay, time flies by they say, fast paced they say, rich characters and captivating they say. Whom to believe i say lol Anyway, overall i'm happy with the responses the movie is getting. Can't wait! The Dark Shape
I'm... genuinely perplexed by people saying it flies by. I nearly fell asleep a number of times, and @Amorphous (yes I'm throwing you under the bus here!) said to me afterward he almost did the same. I guess it just depends on the person, purely anecdotally when the credits rolled on BR2049 in IMAX I turned to my partner with a massive smile on my face and told her I loved it, and then she crushed me by telling me that it bored her to sleep (and she normally enjoys sci-fi and loved Arrival). I think we’re in for a similar sort of reaction here. Some people will be into the more measured pace whereas others may find it dull. I wanted to ask you if you feel like this film tells a complete whole story within itself? I saw someone call it Dune: Part One and I got nervous. MikeQ
For me, this supports my earlier argument that it's important to unpack what one means by a film being boring or slow-paced, etc, and that a film that is unengaging for one flies by for another, for various reasons. I've watched action films that are filled to the brim with movement and action that felt like the longest slogs to get through (and yet were considered exciting and loved and appreciated by others). This is to say that I feel like I understand the two perspectives, because I've been on both sides. Both experiences of the film are valid. Peace, Mike

BUT!!! I did also say that though it managed to be really un-investingly slow at some parts, it managed to get me invested in the story and characters by the end, which I think is a big achievement! It will be so stupid if it doesn't get greenlit, and the film will only live as a potential of what the second film could have brung. My only major overall issue with the film (again, I still really liked it!) is that the entire 2:55 seems like set up. Set up for something that might not even come to fruition. 😕

Absolutely not. The opening title card even says Dune: Part One. I think if they'd saved it for the end (like in It: Chapter One) audiences might have revolted at the cut to black. Hopefully audiences respond to it but kicking off a potential film franchise with a lot of set up in the first instalment is risky. It’s getting a lot of comparisons to Lord of the Rings for that exact reason but LOTR is a lot more accessible and fantastical than something like Dune. Lucas
Oh man the amount of "I hope we get to do a second one" from interviews and stuff. With the "IT BEGINS" tagline and "PART 1" in the film, it's so perfectly set up for the most epic L in the history of planned franchises. However I think after the HBO Max thing, it covers the potential losses at the box office and we will get a sequel.
Lucas
I saw some people comparing the reception to Interstellar earlier and I'll quickly add that Interstellar was at a 71% with a 7.2/10 average rating at this point.

If Dune gets anywhere close to three films before it all crumbles, it'll be a huge win.
