The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

I mean, this was inevitable. Like I was discussing with @BestPicturePlutoNash a few days ago, the 2021 movies are streaming vehicles first and foremost. WB has never had them available in theaters before hitting max. If Matrix has tues previews you can bet your ass it’ll be on max Tuesday.

Reaccs are seriously entertaining me, this was some “sku is blue” level “news.”

I mean, didn't WB do this for TSS as well?  I seem to recall Eric saying that previously.

Either way, "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt" and all that.

Cool. We can still be annoyed about it and express our frustration.

For sure. I suppose it is hard to tell from simply a react how many are “expected but I dislike this” vs “unexpected and I dislike this.” Perhaps I misinterpreted.

FWIW mine was absolutely a "expected but I dislike this".

I'm not surprised but a tiny bit of me DID wonder if they'd hold off. But WB loves losing money this year and are committed to the bit

Also have to think that the wishful thinking regarding Matrix 4 not being a day-and-date release should the likely IATSE strike come to pass is just that.  Contracts have been rewritten at this stage.  What is the motivation for WB to roll them back/reopen negation over compensation even if Matrix 4 slips to Feb or Mar next year?

When someone can answer me that riddle, I'll be slightly more inclined to think that M4 might not go to HBO Max immediately.

Last Duel (Thursday)

Cinemark: 6 (1), 945 (0)

AMC: (26)

6pm (7), 645 (5), 730 (14)

The Green Knight had 1 Thursday showing but was sold more. Green Knight also played younger since the A24 branding. 750k for 6.8m OW. Stillwater had 280k Thursday before a 5.2m.

Respect did 650k with special preview sneaks. Not perfect comp but only other major adult drama release this year. 8.8m OW.

Exactly!

Why would WB roll back this decision and piss off the consumers they worked so hard to get this year for Max. I get people are disappointed and I completely respect that but geez at what point are people just gonna accept reality lol.

Eternals-Thursday showings Nov 4th

AMC Sunset Place 24

Dolby Cinema

6pm- 102/174

9:45pm- 99/174

IMAX

6:30pm- 49/443

REAL D 3D

7:30pm - 0/238

DIGITAL

8:30pm- 29/410

Total 315/1882

This is definitely ahead of Shang-Chi here at this theater. A lot of Shang-Chi's showings filled up several days before release. I expect more showtimes to be added soon. At least one more Dolby and one more Digital as we get closer to the release date.

Not much happening today. Just a few more seats sold. I'm gonna try and do Halloween Kills & Dune next. Updated Eternals numbers:

Dolby Cinema

6PM- 108/174

9:45PM- 101/174

IMAX

6:30PM- 53/443

10:15PM- 37/443

REAL D 3D

7:30 PM- 0/238

DIGITAL

32/410

3D isn't really popular here so no change in those seats sold

Total 331/1882

16 more tickets sold today

Halloween Kills MTC2

Thursday

Showings: 2086 (+133)

Seats Sold: 37413/480945 (+7914)

Gross: $480945 (+100933)

Friday

Showings: 4936

Seats Sold: 60767/684435

Gross: $746923

Friday most likely sold another 13k since yesterday. Anyway, this is moving along quite nicely, though definitely seems to be overindexing in MTC2, so I will tamp down my excited talk from yesterday a bit. Still, my gut is saying 50+ OW with good walkups.

Also, this is less than 24 hours (around 22 or so), I just posted it late.

Eternals MTC1

Previews(T-23) - 39960/355659 719503.42 1790 shows (+4730)

Friday(T-24) - 22230/710878 404356.28 3492 shows (+3582)

Eternals MTC1

Previews(T-22) - 42790/358112 767998.66 1801 shows (+2830)

OD(T-23) - 24472/715011 443602.78 3520 shows (+2242)

Key thing to see if it will hit BW T-19 number for previews (49389/447463 738526.00 2288 shows). It will be close for sure but its trending down as I mentioned yesterday. On plus side its doing it with fewer shows. So there is greater boost potential in the final week.

Well that would be 8 days of sales for BW vs 5 for Eternals. It's early enough in the PS period that this makes a difference.
