The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Governor Inslee of Washington just announced some pretty strict measures, including forbidding public gatherings of more then 250 people. This could result in some of the larger theaters closing.

It's only in 3 counties atm though. We might start seeing an effect when the whole state starts following the strict measures (and we should see other states follow soon too).

Was just looking at the April schedule and was impressed by how dead the whole month looks now that Bond left. Studios were obviously banking on it carrying the entire month until Black Widow opened. The New Mutants was clearly written off two years ago and recent sequel trends aren't really in favor for Trolls maintaining its audience. There are a couple of interesting looking smaller titles (Antlers, Promising Young Woman) but those weren't gonna make much to begin with.

it's hitting the fan today with sports;NCAA March Madness to be played in empty audiotirums (which will make the games about as interesting as watching tiddlywinks;the fan reaction is a big part of the excitement) and NBA considering postponing the rest of the season.

For people that enjoy basketball, the NCAA tournament being played without fans is great.

A virus called Corona...
Seriously, might really screw up North American box office over the next few weeks.

Trump is addressing the nation at 9pm with steps ahead... whether officially closing down theatres or not, people are not going to be in the mood to go sit in a theatre for two hours with a crowd.

BloodShot (T-2)

BloodShot (T-1)

MTC1 - overall 1047 shows 5437/183403 84115.59

MTC2 - overall 1263 shows 3338/192096 43118.32

Jump in show count and ticket sales at MTC1 is quite good. It could get close to 1m previews. So OW wont be as bad as I thought couple of days back.

Probably looking at 0.5m previews or less.

The Hunt (T-1)

MTC1 - overall 612 shows 3807/75207 49724.10 38380.60

MTC2 - overall 603 shows 875/70945 9891.34 6836.05

Headed towards lowest numbers among the 3 openers. Probably headed towards 0.5m previews or so.

MTC2 - overall 629 shows 3723/87692 40488.71 27663.49

Best of the 3 but numbs are still weak. Not sure it has enough momentum to hit 1m previews. I think COVID-19 will have a role for sure.

I Still Believe(T-1)

MTC1 - overall 1046 shows 5606/183335 86674.54 70207.56

MTC2 - overall 626 shows 4674/87334 50981.63 34873.15

Slightly better numbers than Bloodshot but not sure it will finish higher at least for previews.

We already have a couple of states putting limits on numbers people in  public gatherings which might de facto close some movie theaters...250 max in some counties in Washington.

As for Trump, I expect the usual BS, nothing of importance except Donnie trying to blame everybody but himself for the screwed up responst to the virus.

This has advanced shows tonight as well, so it may get 1 mil with the two combined

Early shows are just imax only. I doubt they make a huge difference. I saw MTC2 with just 4 shows while MTC1 has 99 shows.

I Still Believe Early Imax Shows

MTC1 - overall 99 shows 2200/32587 35089.93 28611.69

MTC2 - overall 4 shows 63/1321 971.00 769.00

Looking at 100K or so gross at most from these early shows.

Got to admire the guy if he can close theaters in Canada as well 🙂 Otherwise Canada to rescue NA BO.

On a serious note I feel this is the final week where BO impact wont be felt. Starting next week even holdovers will start to tank if theaters are still open.

NBA player tested positive for the virus;NBA has suspended the season.

The panic factor just went up quite a bit.

This will have ripple effects through the entertainment business..including the movies.

And Tom Hanks announced he and his wife have tested positive for the virus.
