Another strong True Detective hour. Getting ever more anxious about Pizzaman sticking the landing now cause there are a lot of balls in the air. Ali is making a case for getting an Emmy in every episode and now Dorff has undoubtedly joined him there too.

I am watching People vs. OJ Simpson and I am kinda shocked. Didn't know the story and expected to watch kind of an empowering trial that was a huge win for african-american rights or something. But basically... this whole thing was a setback against the narrative of criminal justice racism. Are there black people  cheering for this? It's an example about wealthy people getting away with anything. It shows that wealth inequality is stronger than racial. Also, damn but isn't it basically about a murderer getting away with it by using the victim card? Gosh that's a racists wet dream...

From memory, the O.J.: Made in America doc (which I highly recommend as it's about much more than just the trial) makes a case for the long history of police brutality and the Rodney King case in particular putting the prosecutors in a particularly bad spot. I don't know about cheering but the impression I got was that the jury just wasn't going to be sympathetic to them at that moment in time. It was racism creating a vicious circle, with bigger historical/societal forces at play than specific people and events.

Is that how OJ is seen by some people? A black rights victory?

ive always known OJ Simpson to mean an example of justice state failing, even way before I had any idea of who he was.

The LA police department has a long history of racism and brutality against minorities (particularly African-Americans) so the reaction to the trial was in large part a reaction to those decades of the police abusing their neighborhoods: a bitter “fuck you!” at the justice system that for 80-odd years had been almost systemically targeted at them.

I don't know why most people hate the police in the US. They have a tough job. Most people own a gun in the US. It's scary to be a policeman over there. Dangers at every step

I don’t know if it’s hate for all police.  But the fact there’s so many corrupt police that get covered up by their department it makes it hard to know which ones you can trust or not.

Yeah I get this but even then... what type of 'fuck you' was that? Was he one of them? Was he sharing their struggles? That's the mentality I don't get. Being simply from the same race, the same nationality, sharing the same sexual orientation or gender doesn't mean that you face same struggles and you have same interests.

If anything, it was a huge FU to them. They were told that we will continue to get you behind bars or kill you for little to no reason while this guy butchered 2 people and got away with it because he was part of the system.

Only two other institutions (the military and small business) of the 15 others measured this year scored higher than the police.

Police do seem to be one of the must trusted and liked institution in the US.

I think this can be a case were people that dislike the police are much more vocals (or at least for what reach you) giving a false impression,

I was going to see Serenity for the hell of it but I decided on going to see Green Book in a bit instead. I'll now only have Roma and A Star is Born to watch out of all this year's Best Picture nominees.
