Jeah, but TESB was a controversial movie when it came out back in the day, and AOTC had mixed/bad WOM and came after TPM with also had mixed/bad WOM.

The Last Jedi is a controversial movie with mixed WOM. See the pattern for second entrys in SW trilogys? :sparta:

And that TPM had mixed WOM is a myth. Thing had incredible holds back in the day. That wasnt just fans in denial and people generally beeing happy to see SW return. It had fantastic holds deep, deep into its run.

Dont get me wrong, i think TPM is extremely shitty. But the data doesnt indicate mixed/bad WOM when it came out.

Its very funny to me that - in many cases - the same people that called J.J. "Jar Jar Abrams" for making TFA a "remake of ANH" now call for his return. The hypocrisy is real.

Btw, i mean the Internet in general, this forum is still a very civil place compared to the warzones of YT, Twitter and Co.

These same people also suggest bringing back Lucas and say that the prequels had "heart". :puke:

I was on these very boards almost 1 year ago having arguments with people that The Force Awakens didn't have actual real backlash beyond a vocal minority and was told by many that it wasn't the case and that The Force Awakens was totally mediocre with mixed word of mouth.  Now 1 year later the narrative is The Force Awakens was beloved beyond a vocal minority.

Again, the memories of human beings are fickle and paint the picture they want to see in many cases.  I am as guilty of that as anyone.

Let's give The Last Jedi some time and see where the narrative ends up.

This might rub some people the wrong way, but I would take Star Wars failing to break through in places like China as a compliment of the quality of the film and not an indictment.

Or the rest of the World could see Star Wars' domestic success and muted World Wide appeal as an indictment on the quality North American audiences expect from their films.

I mean, let's not pretend that Star Wars is great from a narrative perspective. The writing is average, the acting is nothing to write home about. What the series has always had going for it is a Universe rich with lore that has captured the imagination. Unfortunately it rarely realizes its potential. There's a reason why these films are rarely, if ever, on critics top 10 or top 20 year end lists when it comes to cinema. They're popcorn flicks in the vein of the Furious or MCU franchise that allow you to turn your brain off more than anything else.

Yet they make Fast and the Furious and Transformers and Warcraft their blockbusters of choice.  =)

Lol, everyone who thinks Disney doesn't give a damn about the divisive reception of TLJ is out of his/her mind. You don't get where Disney got by ignoring what's in front of you and thinking short term. Disney didn't buy Lucasfilm to make 3-4 SW movies. They bought them to bring in profits for years to come. And like it or not, that also means OS. You know why? Because SW did all it could do DOM wise. But there's an entire world out there, not only for movies, but for toys and merchandise too. And Disney clearly cares.

I haven't seen more advertisement for any movie in my life here. There's an add or a SW toy spot every 10 minutes on any channel.

But the movie still fell quite a bit. In the end, movies are only a small part of the equation. They are more or less a huge advertisement for merchandise. And if they don't do well, merchandise will also drop. There was a really interesting article someone posted a few days ago about the SW toy sales shipments dropping 40% from TFA 2 years ago and 20% from RO.

In the end, Disney is a huge enterprise. They aren't Lionsgate who just looks to make some profit. They want the big money. That is why they only do franchise movies. And if they can't break out in emerging markets like China, then that is a big problem for them.

You’re beyond kidding yourself if you think TFA managed a 3.8x multi off a 250m OW by not being anything less than as universally liked as it gets for blockbusters. As far as what happened after the box office run, I still never saw some vocal presence of hate for it. Criticism and issues are a different matter entirely. You will get that with any movie.
