Studio selling market (or buying only some from the start) is really common it is not that dissimilar too getting third party investor on board, the general idea is too reduce expense and risk (while lowering reward when the movie blows up, making the business more predictable with smaller noise).

It could have many reason maybe one financier was expected to finance half the P&A, didn't not wanted too, so they transformed a 40m with a 65-70m world release they felt could not work at that price tag into a 15m movie with a small 15-25m domestic release.

If they would have sold it to theater distributor/world tv rights (like for Suburbicon or like Liongates do for most if not all their movies, Sony for a lot of them) we would have not talked about it (not exact similar scenario. agreeing to an HD version online in just 2 weeks has some impact, but I imagine not that dissimilar to regular market selling Europacorp did on Valerian and hundreds of example), Netflix is a media magnet to think piece.

WB/New Line are doing something similar with Son of Shaft where they have traditional release in the US but streaming on Netflix OS

Maze Runner ending up with an abysmal 2.3x multi. You know it's bad when it gets beat by a 50 Shades multi.

It did turn out its fans, even if it didn't turn anyone else out...and it's gonna be over $275M WW sometime this week, so you know the studio still has to be happy especially after the issues this movie had...

I see. Thanks. I'm still learning about how Netflix handles releases. :)

Oh my God this thread! This thread should be required reading for newbies.  What fun.

I'm biased cuz I started it and kept doing the absurd title updates but it might be my fave BOT thread ever. (Certainly in terms of ones talking about actual numbers.)

Okay, but where does it actually get good

I'm not sure why my first post no longer exists, but basically Deadline posted super early estimates for MJ1. They had an absurdly large range, and were also well below what people were expecting.

That's the first post. It goes from there.

That theatre count is inaccurate, so the PTA is calculating incorrectly.

It does look quite suspicious. In just 3 theaters for over a week and then a sudden inexplicable increase this past Saturday.

I was looking for the first deadline post that started the craziness. Did it get deleted?

If the will of the herd is to stop poor Jimbo talking about his beloved highest grossing film of all time then so be it, I won't be the one to bring up Avatar any more in weekend threads.

It would be nice if some of you learned how to respect others though, the amount of hate in here is astonishing.

It's not hate mate ... it's just the boredom of reading the same "joke" again and again and again... I recognize I laughed myself the first time I read TLJ<0.5A. But at the hundred thousand million time ...it's annoying.

Yeah, that has never been accurate. It was a fathom event, and this past Saturday was the encore. But it played at hundreds of locations each time.
