The IDW comics treated it as such, I doubt the new movie will acknowledge it but who knows?

This looks so much better than that last abomination. Hopefully the 2016 didn't do too much damage to the name

I quite liked the 2016 one personally. The big action moments weren’t very good, but the rest of it I liked very much. Not great, but perfectly enjoyable and about as good a movie as 89’s sequel. 
That said, having watched this new trailer, this looks like a worthy sequel to the original. Has that Amblin, early 80’s feel that’s right up my street.  Very excited.

Honestly I think this film will be good and be very well received by the fans.  Sure, it appears to be playing up the nostalgia a little bit but feels genuine.  Will it be the perfect Ghostbusters 3 that everyone visualised in their heads?? Nah, that ship set sail a long time ago.  But I can tell that the fans will love it, as for making new fans along the way, hard to say really.

From the trailer it also seems to recaputer the Lovecraftian menace of the threat that was so lacking in the sequel and the reboot.

US theaters are their best bet since there's no Ghostbusters nostalgia in most OS territories. Cozying up to the theater owners so that they get good screens.

This is gonna be like The Suicide Squad. It will pay the price for bad previous movie. I know this one is different, but Ghosbusters 2016 left a bad taste. No matter how good this movie is, the brand is tarnished

Was SS mostly unknown before the movie ?

 

Ghostbuster in comparison has a much stronger base that could have (maybe) sustained a blow if this one hit out of the park, Karate Kid, Star Wars, had many forgotten entry has a franchise, Jurassic Park, etc... The Matrix is an other candidate
