On the Blank Check podcast David Sims mentioned that Emma Stefansky had seen it and loved it.

This doesn't really affect me when I've never heard of any of these things or people; all these names mean as much as Bill Murray's brother to me. [Bill Murray glum face]  😂

Plus, the way you said it reminds me of middle-school gossip.  Or Mean Girls.

The positive twitter reactions seeming kind of mixed is not a good sign for the reception.

I think this Matrix movie being mixed might not be as big of a deal breaker as you're suggesting.

This doesn't seem like a movie thats a "turn off your brain and enjoy" type of experience, so if the reactions are mixed then to me that signals different people just took away different interpretations/ideas from it and it actually provoked people to think about what the movie is trying to convey

We'll just have to see if audiences are willing come out for that type of experience. Spiderman No Way Home was always going to dig into the profits for this,  but who knows it might serve as good counter programing.

David Sims is a critic for The Atlantic, and Emma Stefansky is a critic for thrillist/polygon/vanity fair etc. They're not exactly nobodies in the film criticism sphere.

I know people who saw and the reaction was split. All loved the sequels, one found this to be lacking and underwhelming. The other loved and thought it was perfect continuation and re-definition of Matrix. I will say, sounds like it is very dialogue-heavy and without a major standout setpiece

I'd guess 50-60 RT. There will be equal raves and equal mixed reviews. I'm not expecting many pans.

I'm not really saying whether it'll be a big deal or not, but when the customary positive social media reactions are structured in a "Yeah there are problems but" kind of  way I think it points to an under 80% RT score, which may or may not actually matter.

Reupping this quote. Expect almost exactly this reaction from most critics and fans. Just substitute Elm Street for Matrix and Craven for Wachowski

New Nightmare was also "hurt" by being part of an established franchise, with all of the plusses and minuses that comes with the territory.

From what I vaguely recall, originally some horror fans were hyped that Wes Craven was coming back and he would "fix" give the ailing franchise a shot in the arm.

What they got... wasn't what they expected.  I don't recall how much it was known beforehand that the film would be more meta than not (I seem to recall it was known), but I tend to think that put some people off.  I also think some folks, maybe even a majority of the people making the loudest noises, would have been fine/looking forward to a film that was a direct sequel to the first and ignored what they didn't like that came afterwards some of the other films in the franchise. A reboot sequel as it were, in the vein of the latest Halloween films.

This is all from an outsider's perspective, as horror ain't my bag in the slightest.  Also vague recollections almost 30 years on.

To be fair it's not like these reactions are coming out of a super hyped premiere (I think?). So they won't be as inflated as the typical blockbuster reactions.

Thanks.  I'm not up on my latest Film Critics, lately...but I just hope they're better than these usual YouTubers I see...😉

So, I put this in tracking b/c it will bump presales, but I figure Matrix fans may want to know there's a current Atom tickets BOGO banner for this movie, so if you don't have tickets, you may want to buy a few (like I did).  It's always "while supplies last" and it seems there's no cheap Tuesday Xmas week, so this may be a cheap way to see the movie over the holidays if you're not 100% committed (or if you are - get a refund on your 1st buy:)...

Oh yeah you can trust me on that, they're not YouTuber people or anywhere near that kinda vein. No idea how the film will turn out of course, but I'd rather hear Emma Stefansky loving a film than plenty of others.
