Joker is a far more impressive story than Endgame. Avatar’s record was going to fall one way or the other, as there were movies coming close already (IW, SW7).
And doing 1B without China is equally impressive, as Endgame wouldn’t even come close to Avatar without its huge overperformance in China.

Well Avatar was an original film, so Endgame's story wasn't even special to begin with - as you've stated ~

Even still, there's around an $8 million difference between Avatar and Endgame at present, which'll be surpassed when Disney re-release Avatar in anticipation for Avatar 2 ~ But you're absolutely right ^_^

1b club may not be exclusive as ever but it is still an historical achievement as there was no R-rated film hit that mark before.

It's a film with very little action and certainly next to none showoff SFX. The fact is going to gross 1 bill is simply incredible given today's tastes and dependence on the Chinese market to achieve these figures. Truly historic run.

Of the year when we have the first non-Cameron WW #1 in 22 years???

Endgames run was mindblowing, but it was a movie everyone expected to be enormous. So while its first 2 weeks and its ending marathon to beat Avatar were amazing, i cant be helped but be more excited for a film that will likely be the first one to cross a billion while beeing R-Rated. I dunno, it was just that much more unexpected for me personally.

On one hand, you have the biggest movie of all time - and no, crossing Avatar, independently of how long the build-up took or by how much, is no small feat. On the other, the 1st R-rated billion dollar film, which, on top of the already historical feat, is not by any means an action movie.

Both are arguably the two most jaw-dropping box office stories of the decade, quite frankly. It's hard to choose which is the alpha one.

Just looking at OS-China, the order of impressiveness (not just looking at how big the numbers are) amongst those 3 IMO:

Avatar 1.8b

Joker 700m

AEG 1.3b

Dom

Avatar (original non-sequel sci-fi)

AEG

---

Joker (Extremely impressive. Less so than say American Sniper.)

China

Avatar

AEG

WW

Avatar

AEG

Joker

Pretty sure any Avatar Re-release before the second will be restricted to just double bill screenings on opening night etc. We've had that over here with Star Wars, Avengers and all sorts of other movies. Pretty sure it doesn't move the needle on gross.

Avatar is a slightly different film, especially when you consider the 3D aspect (which I assume would be available to a re-release) and the fact China is within the equation now - more so to a degree that wasn't available in 2009. Disney will want full returns on Avatar 2, so we'll see if those restrictions will be in place.

Yes but to be fair there two points you ignored.

1.) It’s R rated

2.) The landspace this decade movie wise is vastly different than the ones of the past as Joker is a film with little VFX or action.

I easily preferred Endgame over Joker and I think both had very impressive runs (it’s no easy feat to be Avatar WW) but for me Joker is a bit more impressive as Endgame was going to big no matter what.

Joker's performance again suggests audiences are willing to give anything a chance as long as it's attached to some known IP. I really hope it gives studios more confidence to do wild and different things with their current franchises and not always go for the big blockbuster style film when it's shown time and time again how easy it is to fail with that. Also hopefully dispels any notion that only certain type of films work well OS.

Not gonna really go into the whole Endgame vs Joker argument just ask yourself would you be more surprised if someone said Endgame would beat Avatar vs Joker making $1 Billion. Which ever one is the answer is the one that's more impressive to you.

  4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 1.944B

  30. Despicable Me 3 - 1.014.7B
  31. The Dark Knight - 1.004.9B

31 out of 43. That's around 69.8%. So quite a lot actually.

Joker's trump card is exactly what @lorddemaxus said: none of the movies in the billion dollar club have an R rating. Let alone those not released in China.

This is exactly the same thought process I have. The fact that we’re even having this discussion says enough about Jokers run as EG opening weekend and beating Avatar was already incredible. It’s all about  what you feel is more impressive to you personally.

IW and SW7 were far behind Avatar by 600-700m+.

Aslo, EG WW-China is higher than IW and SW7 WW including China with ease.

More than that: none of them are relentless misery-fests with hateful protagonists who find no redemption.

If that happens then J has a good shot at 300 on next Sunday itself as weekdays should be helped by Halloween.

BVS 4th and 5th weekend

Apr 8-10 2 $23,363,079 -54.5% 4,102 -154 $5,695 $296,613,621 3
Apr 15-17 4 $9,028,356 -61.4% 3,505 -597 $2,575 $311,330,086 4

Oct 18, 2019 2 $29,251,840 -48% 4,090 $7,152   $247,275,844 3
Oct 25, 2019 1 $18,900,000 -35% 3,936 $4,802   $277,583,522 4

Joker is now more than doubling BVS's weekend - 9 vs 19.

Captain Marvel minus China is $974m (made $154m in China).
