GODZILLA VS KONG WEEKEND THREAD | Read the rules before posting | 32.2M 3-Day/48.5M 5-Day | The monkey saved the theaters!

Recommended Posts

It’s so badass to see a double-digit daily number again. Love it!

It definitely feels surreal that Godzilla vs. Kong’s 5-day gross alone is going to land so close to the total domestic grosses of the biggest pandemic era releases to date. It’s obviously benefitting from being the first big event movie as theater counts and capacities expand in a significant way.

The market is looking to be extremely slow between now and Memorial Day weekend (Cruella/A Quiet Place) outside of potentially Mortal Kombat and Spiral so wonder if anything will move up to take advantage. Probably not since the June/July titles seem locked in at this point.

One have to assume the current resurgence is merely a "fluke" that won't put market to close down again especially those in CA.NY, which to me, is  too risky now to assume that.

That’s not great for Nobody or The Unholy unfortunately. Sub $3m is not good. Considering Freaky did that in (much worse) November.

Fantastic for Godzilla vs Kong, 73% uptick despite being so hype driven.

With this, it is hard  to make 5x multiplier like how The marksman & unhinged did. The Gvk impact just got too big especially under restrictive capacity

Maybe there is hope for the box office after all. Too bad Black Widow moved, even if they had decided to stick with the $30 Disney Plus release it probably could have hit around $50 million opening in May based on how Godzilla vs Kong is doing.

I think with this respectable GvK opening the studios are done pushing back release dates.

With how well Godzilla vs Kong is doing with this hybrid release, this may....may be a good sign for Black Widow, Premier Access price be damned.

If these same day theatrical-streaming releases work like it seems to be doing with Godzilla vs Kong. . I can see this becoming the norm in the near future.

Optimism has been a dangerous to thing to have over the past year but I'm really holding out for things to keep improving and hopefully by the time Spider-Man and Matrix come out it's a major Christmas season for the box office. I guess that season could bring some higher covid numbers but with any luck (and a few miracles) there will be enough vaccinations by then to make it a minor factor.

Guy Ritchie's Wrath of Man with Jason Statham took that date but it would probably make The Gentlemen numbers at most in any scenario.

I loved The Gentlemen and even I didn't know he had a new movie coming out until a couple days ago.

It was actually supposed to open in The Gentlemen's equivalent spot in January but was pulled from there among the many date changes and has now taken advantage of Black Widow moving from the first weekend of May spot in hopes of making some bucks. Was apparently one of the final movies that managed to wrap right before COVID put everything on pause for a while.

Godzilla Vs Kong is going to have so many “firsts” this weekend!

Like Wonder Woman 1984, The Croods 2 and Raya, seems like it’ll easily be #1 for three consecutive weeks too, before Mortal Kombat comes along.

Whoever said moviegoing was bound to stay dead, or that streaming has won, needs to go back to business school. Because a big event movie plus holiday weekend, along with LA & NYC reopened exhibition markets equaled big bucks at the box office as Warner Bros./Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong decimated all industry projections with a 5-day box office of $48.5M after a $11.6M Saturday, +73%.

Deadline mention 11.6m Saturday? That is a bit...low
