Sacto:

Scream (2022) Not Even Dirty Count: 1377 tickets sold as of Wed Morn

132.15% of Halloween Kills as of T-2 (taken Tue Night)

96.50% of Halloween Kills as of T-1 (taken Wed Night)

Obs been some sales this morning, plus no Ontario. But if just adj for Ontario and I lop off 4%, that would suggest 6.22m and 4.54m respectively.

On the other hand, Sacto hella underperformed for HK, so that could be a misleading comp.

Thus, other comps:

73.64% of AQP II as of T-2 (3.53m)

55.98% of F9 as of T-2 (3.97m)

129.66% of TSS as of T-2 (5.1m) (adj downward for no Ont)

Now, if you'll excuse me:

I never realized Scream wasn't THAT big. I know 4 flopped but still"

1- 103m

2- 101m

3- 89m

4-38m

But of course, yeah.. horror wasn't that big in 90s anymore, especially slashers. 4 was too long and 3 was poor. And first 2 had December legs.

I think the new one can reach the first. It'll come close IMO.

$103M was insane for a horror movie in 1996. The fact it beat much more hyped titles like Space Jam (a movie that had "sky is the limit" expectations pre-release that it didn't come close to living up to) is a testament as to what a surprise phenomenon it was.

*tosses and turns in sleep*

Quick and Dirty Scream (2022) Sacto Report:

1603/12199 (13.14% sold)

As of T-1:

112.33% of Halloween Kills (5.28m) (adj down for Ont)

66.98%   of AQP II               (3.01m)

55.29%   of F9                    (3.93m)

119.36% of TSS                   (4.70m) (adj down for Ont)

Reminder that Halloween Kills under-performed locally, at least compared to its nearest comp of AQP II.  But if Sacto just doesn't like horror (or at least slashers [even if they are on the memetic side]), then H:K might still be the best comp, but also might represent something of a best case scenario.

@Krissykins the big ass OW is coming, just one movie and 11 years later than expected. This shit will beat Scream 4 by Monday.

I’m not letting my hopes get carried away, but that would be amazing.

For some context, those numbers are huge for a slasher film though. Scream and Scream 2 remained the two highest grossing slasher films for 22 years until Halloween (2018) opened.

If this one explodes as expected, we will need a "Scream 4 - What Went Wrong: The 2nd Edition" thread because it will be even more what the fuck than before. Was it the weight of the 4 in the title or something?

Horror movies are a bigger deal and nostalgia's a bigger deal. Scream 4 just came out at the wrong time.

Scream 4 also came out at a time when slashers were not only underperforming but also just really bad. It was the time of the Platinum reboots like Friday (2009), Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) and others - slasher horror was just on a downhill trend in generel at that time. Also, old time Scream fans maybe werent all that nostalgic in 2011 - now, another 11 years later, probably they are.

Scream 4's floppage in retrospect makes total sense between 90s nostalgia not really being a thing yet in 2011, the weak response to the previous movie, and horror in general just being in a bad place then, with its comeback happening in the last five years or so. The 2000s in particular were dire for the genre, both at the box office and especially in terms of quality.

I may be able to do another run tonight before shows start.  For now, I'd put it at 4.25m to account for some closings.
