Weekend Thread | Actuals: Smile 22.6, DWD 6.85, TWK 6.8, Avatar 5, Bros 4.8

Recommended Posts

FRI - $8.2M (inc. $2M previews)

SAT - $7.4M (-9.8% with previews, +19.4% without previews)

SUN - $4.8-5.2M (-20 to 35%)

Weekend - $20.4-20.8M

They are definitely underestimating that Sunday if Saturday is that high. $4.4M SUN would be a 40.5% SUN drop, whereas I see more of a 30-35% drop happening

If they pushed Barbarian harder, there is a chance for that movie to open 20m too. Any idea if Barbarian is a horror? The movie doesn't have typical drop like a typical horror genre.

Barbarian is your classic horror film, but people keep seeing it because there’s a lot of intrigue surroundjng it. Everyone who sees it tells their friends to see it and add on, “don’t read anything about the movie, just go see it.”

I think what they meant was if Barbarian was more like a thriller in the vein of The Black Phone, or pure horror like Smile.

$22m for Smile is fantastic. 11 x its preview number of $2m, which already included early access screenings. Saturday jump indicating the positive WOM is already catching on. Another #1 win for Paramount.

Paramount has had one heck of a comeback year. Too bad Babylon is their only remaining 2022 release and probably won't land at #1 (assuming Avatar is still dominating when it goes wide the first weekend of January) but even that should be a hit too.

Insane Saturday at 8.6M. This one might have strong legs throught October barring a big drop against Halloween Ends.

Though when Halloween ends, Halloween Ends will end, while Smile might be able to carry on a bit after that date.

Woah that Saturday is nuts. + nearly 40%

If it’s storm related other stuff should also come in higher than it looked from Friday,

I thought so too. Some estimates seemed too low anyway but didn't realize that storm could have affected Friday.

YES, C'MON HORROR!

Didn't love everything about Smile as said before - hedged its bets between being thematic and being a scare-a-thon - but it did lots right and that ambiguity was probably good for its populist credentials.

Big win for Smile. Splendid drops continue for Barbarian.

Halloween Ends is set to do gangbusters even if I haven't enjoyed those at all. At this point surely respect needs to go agains this genre even in the most cynical quarters for what it's doing.

We had to endure the 90s when as a horror film  you had to be super-meta or be an elevated thriller to have any credibility or be panned, including - towards the end - by the wise guys of the burgeoning internet culture.

We had to endure the 00s where a stream of not-magnificent-but-reliable mainstream movies were all perfectly okay to good but were bizarrely and relentlessly panned by critics as a knee-jerk.

We had to endure the late 00s and early 10s where we were the genre was so driven by marketing that borderling-talentless frat boy Eli Roth and somewhat-visionary-but-can't-help-himself Rob Zombie were what was being pushed as the future above what was already a transformative indie scene with a load of actual talent.

Still no awards though. Heaven forfend. Not unless its an Official Exception TM.

Yep. Was gonna be hard to miss 20 from that Fri, ests we're being pretty silly.

Rip the 19 streak though, sad

I guess this means Black Panther 2 won't open to 19M. Who would have guessed?
