I'll try and keep an eye on this performance, with that perspective. Right now, it's tracking is in line using The Marvels, but I felt that was an overindex here for various reasons, so maybe it's actually pointing stronger than I assumed. I might pay closer attention to whatever other comps I have.

@Tinalera does track Toronto along with few other cities. She did post an update few days ago.

Was Dune also on Canada HBO Max? That might skew things a bit if it wasn’t a day and date release there (I genuinely don’t know if it was)

Marvels sales were awful at this stage so that comp should keep rising. The Thu/Fri sales ratio is also better than HG BoSS (~8x IM) at a similar stage. I'm bullish on the OW too fwiw.

I don't recall Dune specifically, but generally, WB films that year were were available for pvod up here on same day of release. Dune likely got the same treatment.

 

I can't recall where we were on masking and social distancing in Ontario around that time, but I think it was pretty open until things shut down again in January.

Actually they weren't. In every country outside of America, they got exclusive theatrical releases. Not sure about Canada though.

That's what I was saying. It was PVOD. You could rent at premium price (I paid $25 for Godzilla v Kong for example) through platforms like apple or Google stores. But, we didn't have it free through any streamers (Crave TV has the WB films up here, and they didn't have it on release).

Just FYI: at the time of Dune's release there was no HBO Max outside US and Latin America but Latam had a 45 day window for theatrical release. Rest of the world didn't get it through neither parterships (Crave on Canada or Sky on the UK for example) nor PVOD so no day-on-date effect anywhere ouside US.
