Grand Cine

3/08-3/10 Weekend Estimates : KFP 4 : 58,3M , Dune 2 : 46,3M , Imaginary : 10M , Caprini : 7,6M

Recommended Posts

Low 40s for Dune . Similar drop to batman. Good I guess . Jump was muted . Hope it goes go up to 13ish and get to 45m. 235M-250M I guess .

Great for KP4 . 55-60M.  Presales looked muted for a while but wasn't really worried . Walk-ups are always big for animated movies .

March delivering the goods.

Ghostbusters could deliver 40M+

GxK feels like skull island/ROTB  opening to me.

I suspect Dune goes up, especially with another Sat jump coming. These numbers were from 12:30-1pm Pacific time.

Yeah, I would think the Saturday increase will be really strong. It was very strong last week.

Kung Fu Panda is now a 16 year old franchise so there's likely some frontloading at play (a 10 year old who saw the original in theaters in 2008 is 25-26 today) but overall a very strong start it's looking like. Also seems like good news for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon next year.

Panda doing serious numbers whilst Dune storms to $250 million area is great news all round.

Do I want Dune to top $300 million? Hell yeah.  Panda being a big hit is great for the overall business though. Make no mistake.

Strong weekend. We’ve turned a corner for sure.

Also for Wild Robot, which will be getting a lot of theater exposure for its trailer

Why don't you call me honey? 💔

I only save it when I want to be snarky and/or when I have to reprimand. You have given me no reason to. Which is a good thing!

Early studio Fri projections, take at your own caution:

18.2-18.5 Panda

12.5ish Dune

3.8-4.0 Imaginary

Seems high for Imaginary, unless it’s coming for a big x previews multiple.

Feels like Kung Fu Panda has kinda become popular again (a la How to Train Your Dragon) for peeps in their 20s, perhaps a bit of nostalgia for those IPs from our childhood (Shrek too, but that was never not popular)

Doing a KFP4/Dune 2 double feature today. Though KFP4 was easily the weakest of the franchise and tbh felt as big a letdown as Incredibles 2, I still had fun with it. Having dinner before Dune 2 in a hour, but am very glad at this being a fruitful March box office wise.

One thing to keep in mind if Part 2 only does 40-45 this weekend is that the week days were fairly strong for a 166 minute long movie so that might have burnt off some business. Although 300 m would probably be off the table.

Unless you’re utterly optimistic, 300M was never a real possibility to Dune table.

The only guys I’ve seen trying to suggest Dune could make 300M+ domestically and over 50M this weekend are the same guys who 3 weeks ago were arguing that Dune could make 100M+ OW and 1 billion worldwide. So…
