JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

It's got little competition until the 11th of Aug right? Apart from Godzilla?

If you're talking about Finding Dory, it will also be competing with One Piece Film Gold  which opens on 7/23. The One Piece movies are proven money makers. The previous movie made ¥6.85 billion ($65.2 million) in the domestic box office alone.

Other guy pointed out One Piece Gold. It's going to be in a fuck ton of theaters, and it's most likely going to take away Finding Dory's biggest screens.

It won't kill Dory's run, but it will be a little less lucrative.

Finding Dory is breaking out in a remarkable way.

Right now, the sampled sales are 143,164 at 1400 hours, a 24% increase from the same time yesterday. All of the other movies are mostly flat.

This was yesterday, for the record:

Those Dory numbers are fine. It should end up near Zootopia.

Having seen the movie, I still think Dory will make waaay more than Zootopia, and end up near Finding Nemo. The theme about family is a recipe for success in Japan. That's what made Frozen and BH6 had crazy legs. IO had a strong family theme too, that's why I still don't understand why it didn't do more. It did have great legs though. I have a feeling that WOM will be exceptional for Dory because of this, the same feeling I had about Frozen and BH6.

I think the Japanese audience views Dory as a kiddy movie, judging by evening sales. The same went for Zootopia at first, but it changed later on its run because of WOM for the original movie. I don't think people's perspectives on Dory are going to change.

Like I said, I think the family theme of Dory will help its WOM to reach adult/young adult audience as well. I might be wrong, but we'll see.

one piece wont matter. It will have great OW but tends to crash after that. TS3 had Bayside Shakedown and Borrower's Arrierty during its entire run and still had great legs. I think Dory will do better.

Pokemon's right in line with its underwhelming estimated performance and thus claims another dubious honor for the Pokemon film franchise with the lowest weekend admissions numbers in 14 years! Finding Dory came in a little under optimistic expectations of Y1 billion, but right between the Y750 million - Y1 billion range, so it's yet again another success for Disney!  Finding Dory looks to finish a little under Monsters University's total of Y8.96 billion, but could certainly beat it considering Finding Dory should find better success with it being a sequel to the Y11 billion grossing Finding Nemo and word of mouth should build up soon.  As for this week's biggest opener (and biggest domestic opener for the Japanese market to date if memory's correct), we should expect banging numbers!

At this point, One Piece Film Gold is almost certainly guaranteed to open above Y1 billion and could possibly open above the current record set by OP: Film Z.  The summer box office is on fire right now and should continue to be the case for a few more weeks!  As Cananstop already said, the One Piece films tend to fall drastically after opening weekend and thus pose very little challenge for holdovers once its opening week and second weeks are over.  Finding Dory should have very little problem coexisting with the biggest juggernaut of the summer.

One Piece Film Series

Opening Weekend:

Y1.372 billion ($16.7 million) / 1,140,081 :: One Piece Film Z (2012)

Y1.038 billion ($11.6 million) / 819,738 :: One Piece Film Strong World (2009)

Totals:

Y6.87 billion ($77.1 million) / 5.67 million :: One Piece Film Z, 2012

Y4.80 billion ($58.1 million) / 4.1 million :: One Piece Film Strong World, 2009

BTW, this is the final update to Zootopia's Japanese total:

64 花より男子ファイナル 東宝 77.5 2008/06/28 *
65 シックス・センス 東宝東和 76.8 1999/10/30
66 ゲド戦記 東宝 76.5 2006/07/29 *
67 ズートピア(Zootopia) ディズニー 76.1 2016/04/23

94 名探偵コナン 純黒の悪夢(Detective Conan 2016) 東宝 62.8 2016/04/16

The text in in black, rather than red, so it's totally gone from theaters across the country. Basically, the final few tickets got it past ¥7.6 billion.

Edit:

This is the list:
